Page 24 of Beyond Reason (Lost Kings MC 9)
âHow could she do that?â she asks, sounding so lost and shattered.
What excuse can I invent that will ever make any of this hurt less? None. So, I go for honesty. âI donât know. I do know what a good person you are and how much I love you.â
âMarcel, I love you too. So much.â She rakes her nails over her arms and neck, leaving red streaks over her pale skin and I grab her hands to make her stop. âI hate that you heard all of that.â
âIt doesnât matter to me.â I pause and take a deep breath, considering my next words. âCharlotte, do you know why my mother abandoned Heidi and me at my grandmotherâs?â
She tilts her head at the shift in conversation.
âHeidi said she ran off with a boyfriend or something.â
âProbably. But thatâs not why she left us there.â
âFrom what youâve both said, it doesnât sound like she was a great mother before that.â
âNo, she wasnât. But itâs my fault she left.â
Some of her uncertainty disappears and her voice comes out stronger. âMarcel, all kids feel that way about a parent leaving.â
âThis time itâs actually true.â I run my fingers through my hairâat the rate Iâm going, Iâll be bald soon. âShe used to have a lot of men in and out of our house. When Heidi was maybe five or six, one of them took an unusual interest her. I didnât like it one bit, but I was a kid. There wasnât much I could do other than tell her not to be alone with him and stay with her at night if he was at the house.â
âJesus, Marcel. How come sheâs never said anything?â
âHonestly, Iâm not sure if she even remembers. You know I was already hanging around the club by then. I asked two of the older members to talk to the guy. I just wanted them to scare him away, so heâd stop coming around.â
âAnd?â
âThey talked to him. Talked to my mother too. She dumped us at my grandmotherâs not long after.â
âThatâs not your fault,â she argues in a fierce tone that sounds more like my Charlotte. âYou were trying to protect your sister.â
âYeah, well, I didnât know it until recently, but my grandmother beat the hell out of Heidi for years after she kicked me out. So thatâs on me too.â
She gasps and covers her mouth with her hand. âGoddammit. I knew things werenât right when I represented her, but Heidi neverââ
âBecause the old bitch filled her head with bullshit about how sheâd get put into foster care if she said anything.â
âThatâs ridiculous.â
âShe was a kid. She didnât know any better.â
Charlotte seems so distressed, I almost feel bad for sharing this with her on top of everything else sheâs had to take in today.
âWhen I tell you that Iâve fucked up and failedââ
âThatâs not your fault, Marcel. Come on.â
âIt is, though. And I hate myself for it. Hate that for all those years she held it in and thought she couldnât tell me.â My voice cracks and I stop. This isnât about me or my guilt. This is about Charlotte.
âBut itâs not your fault. Youâre so good to her. All she ever talked about was how much she loves you.â
I close the distance between us and take her hands. âIâm sharing this with you because I want you to understand what kind of family I come from, Charlotte. People can say what they want about Heidi having Alexa so young, but sheâs a damn good mother. A hundred times better than our own mother ever was.â
Her bottom lip trembles and she finally meets my eyes.
âFrom what your uncle said, it sounds like your mother was always a troubled, selfish bitch. Thatâs probably why you ended up being the sweet, loving person you are. Whatâs going through your head, Charlotte? You think youâre going to magically turn into a monster one day?â
A faint smile ghosts over her lips. âYouâre trying to tell me Iâm being ridiculous.â
I throw my hands up in the air. âFinally! She gets it.â
She doesnât laugh. Instead, she wraps her arms around my middle and rests her cheek against my chest, which is even better.
âToday sucked so bad,â she murmurs.
âYes, it did.â
âThank you.â
âYou never have to thank me.â
One check of her face shows how much sheâs still hurting.
âWhat can I do to cheer you up, Sunshine?â
âI donât think anything can cheer me up right now,â she says, shaking her head.
âNo? How about if I do a strip tease for you?â I back away and slip off my cut, nice and slow, making a good show of it, add a few hip thrusts, and generally make a fool of myself. But it does the trick. Sheâs laughing in no time.
âOh my God. Make it stop.â
âStop? This isnât turning you on, babe?â
More giggles and she throws her hands over her mouth, but still canât contain her laughter.
âThatâs better.â I stop gyrating around the room and point to her packed bags. âYou want to explain this?â
âI panicked.â
âNo more panic. You donât have to hide any part of yourself from me.â My smile fades and I look her in the eyes. âAnd donât you dare ever leave me like that.â
âIâm sorry.â
âYou know Iâd hunt you down, right?â
She huffs out a laugh. âAnd what? Drag me back by my hair?â
âNo. Show you how much I love you until you believe it.â
âI love you too.â
âAnd then drag you back by your hair.â
She rolls her eyes, but her smile remains. I hold out my hand and she curls her fingers around mine. âCome on, you havenât eaten all day.â
âUgh. I donât think I can keep anything down,â she protests as she follows me downstairs.
âWeâll see.â
Turns out, my girlâs starving. Together we cook a simple dinner of spaghetti and meatballs. Itâs not until weâre almost finished that I bring up Keeper.
âWhat do you think that asshole meant by Merlin made your last thug boyfriend disappear?â
She sets her fork down and clasps her hands in front of her. âI have no idea.â
Thatâs what I was afraid of.
âYou didnât date any gangsters in high school?â I say it in a teasing way, not wanting to risk upsetting her again.
âNo. Never. My mother always hated the ânerdyâ guys I brought home.â She narrows her eyes. âWhy? Whatâs on your mind?â
âIâm not sure yet.â
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
As much as possible, I try to put my uncleâs revelations out of my head. Marcel helps by announcing he needs me to help him paint every room in the house.
First, we lure my brother over so we can show him the guest house.
To my surprise, Marcelâs actually excited about showing it to Carter.
The house alarm lets out two short beeps, informing us someoneâs coming up the driveway. I glance at the monitor and relax when I recognize Carterâs car.
âWhy you so jumpy?â Marcel asks.
âIâm just excited to show him our place.â
He kisses my cheek and we head outside to greet my brother.
Carter approaches us slowly. âDamn, this is some spread, Teller. I canât even be mad at you for taking my sister away.â
âHe didnât take me away. Iâm probably closer to you now than when you were living at Momâs.â
âNot the same.â
He gives me a kiss on the cheek and hands me a bottle of wine. I raise an eyebrow and he shrugs. âI didnât know what else to bring and didnât want to show up with nothing.â
âThanks.â
Marcel happily gives my brother the âguyâ tour before bringing him into the kitchen for appetizers and drinks.
âHowâs my apartment?â I ask.
âYour landlordâs such a dick. He stopped by and hassled me because Iâm not on
the lease. So, can you help me fix that?â
I tap my finger against my chin and pretend to consider it. âWell, I could, but I had something else in mind.â
He narrows his eyes. âWhat?â
Marcelâs grin seems to alarm my brother. âWhat are you two up to?â
âCome here, we want to show you something,â I say, taking Carterâs arm and leading him outside.
Marcel follows us and at the door to the guest house produces a key.
âWow. This is cool.â He moves through the space quickly, taking note of everything in his path. âSo, I tell you two Iâm on the verge of getting evicted and youâre showing off all your fabulous space?â
âActually,â Marcel says, holding out a key. âThis is yours if you want it.â
Carterâs eyes widen. âMine?â
Marcel jerks his head toward the stairs. âCheck out the upstairs.â
He eyes us carefully before taking the steps one at a time.
âOh, wow! Itâs an apartment.â Heâs silent for a minute and then thereâs the sound of his feet racing above us. A few minutes later, he hops down the steps with an eager expression on his face. âAre you saying I can live up there?â he asks.
âYup,â Marcel says, handing over the keys.
âWait,â Carter says. âYou two wonât be doing any weird, naked, sex stuff in the yard, right?â
âWeâll make sure youâre out when we do our weird, naked, outdoor sex stuff,â Marcel assures him.
âGross,â Carter mumbles. His eyes light up again. âAm I allowed to have girls over?â
âIf you can find one who wants to come over, yeah.â
Carter groans and meets my eyes. âI donât have to take that abuse from your old man, do I?â
âAfraid so, little brother.â
His gaze sweeps the downstairs area. âWhatâre you going to do with this space?â
âItâs yours too,â Marcel says. âThought you could turn it into an art studio or something.â
âSeriously?â He glances at everything again and his smile falters. âHow much do you want for rent?â
âNo rent,â Marcel answers, beating me to it. Carter opens his mouth to protest, but gets cut off. âJust help me out around here and make sure your sisterâs safe whenever Iâm away.â
âYou got it. Get me one of those big green tractors and Iâll even mow the crap out of the yard,â Carter says.
Marcel bursts out laughing and holds out his hand. âDeal.â
CHAPTER THIRTY
Charlotteâs back to work. Taking time off after her uncleâs attack left her with a lot of catching up to do. Thatâs why I volunteer to help Carter clean out her apartment.
After I load the last box thatâs coming to our house into my truck, Carter takes off. âIâm stopping by Biancaâs. She wanted to come over and see my new place.â He hesitates. âIf thatâs okay.â
âItâs your place.â
âThanks.â
I wander inside the apartment to give it another look. Since her old bed couldnât take our furious fucking and left dents in her bedroom wall, I figure itâs only fair I patch it up. I run over the materials waiting for me. Paint, tape, tarp, sheet, roller, pan, knife, and a few other odds and ends.
The knock at the door surprises me at first, but itâs probably the landlord, so I open it, looking forward to scaring the piss out of him after the shitty way heâs treated Carter.
Itâs Keeper.
He rears back when he sees me. âWhatâre you doing here?â
âWhat are you doing here?â
He stuffs his hands in his pockets and pushes past me. I follow his gaze as he takes in the empty space. âWhereâs she going?â
âNone of your business.â
âShe moving in with you?â
I cross my arms over my chest and donât bother with an answer.
âThat ainât right. Her dad was a Wolf Knight, you know.â
âYeah, Iâm aware.â
I follow him into the kitchen. âThis where she stabbed him?â He shakes his head and stares at the floor as if inspecting for blood drops.
âItâs where he hit her first.â
Keeper grunts and rocks back on his heels a few times before meeting my eyes. âMerlinâs been asking a lot of questions since your visit.â
Good. At least what little concern Merlin showed for his niece wasnât bullshit. âAnyone got answers for him?â
âHeâs asking about shit that happened years ago.â
âYou know something about it?â
âI know she brought some gangbanging lowlife to one of our parties one time.â
Rage boils my blood and I take a step closer. âYou want to say that again?â
âNever mind.â He attempts to step around me, but I stop him with a hand to his chest.
âFinish your thought.â
The hesitation he walked in here with disappears and he slaps my hand away. âNothinâ to finish.â
In my pocket, my phone goes off and Keeper tries to shove past me. âStay put.â
I donât recognize the number, but thatâs not unusual, so I answer.
âWhere you at, Teller?â Merlin shouts on the other end.
âAt Charlotteâs apartment. Your VP stopped by and weâre having a chat.â
He curses and thereâs a crash in the background. âYou keep that piece of shit there. Iâm on my way over now.â
âYou wanna tell me why?â
âJust fuckinâ do it.â
Iâd laugh at the frustration in his voice if I wasnât so focused on keeping the man in front of me in place.
âWeâll be here.â My gaze searches the empty apartment for any potential weapons. We just cleaned my girlâs apartment out, so itâs bare.
âSheâs not there?â
âNo. Itâs just me and Keeper right now.â
âIâm on my way. Do not let him leave.â
I hang up and shove the phone in my pocket. âYour prez is real eager to talk to you.â
âHe ainât my prez anymore, thanks to Charlotte.â
âYeah, itâs all her fault he snapped and attacked her.â
âI need to be someplace.â He tries going around me again and I stop him.
âWhere you off too in such a hurry? You obviously stopped by to talk to Charlotte about something, so speak.â
âItâs none of your business.â
âThatâs where youâre wrong. Everything about her is my business. And since youâre never getting anywhere near her again, you might as well say what you gotta say to me.â
Quickâbut not quick enoughâhis fist comes flying at my face. I block it easily and use the momentum to turn him and wrench his arm behind his back.
âWhatâs gotten into you, Keeper?â I snarl.
âYou donât want to start this war, Teller.â
âOh, I think I do.â
My gaze lands on a roll of duct tape on the counter. I canât exactly ask him to hold still so I can secure him. Instead, I hook my arm around his neck and use my other arm to tighten the hold, squeezing hard until he slumps to the floor. The fuckerâs so heavy, he almost takes me down with him. Once Iâm sure heâs out, I release him.
It takes a few seconds to bind his wrists behind his back with the tape and secure his ankles. When Iâm finished, I drag him into the bedroom.
I spread out the tarp and roll him onto it.
A few minutes later heâs still out cold when someoneâs banging on the front door.
I open it and find a steaming Merlin.
âGuess Whisper let you out of the basement,â I say, opening the door wider.
He growls and shoves his way past me. âWhere is that traitor?â
I shut the door. âHeâs in the bedroom.â
Merlinâs carrying a lumpy black backpack. I can only imagine the goodies inside.
My hand goes to the pistol in the holster at my side. A last resort, since the sound wil
l draw too much attention. My other hand brushes against the hunting knife strapped to my opposite leg.
âThis motherfucker still alive?â Merlin asks, toeing Keeperâs leg with his boot.
âWhereâs the love for your bro, Merlin?â
He glares at me. âWhat do you think?â
âIâm guessing you asked him some questions and donât like the answers.â
âGee, you really are as smart as they say,â he sneers. âHe did it. Charlotte said there was a second guy. My moneyâs on Keeper.â
âWhy?â Not that I disagree with Merlinâs conclusion, but Iâm interested in how he got there.
âHe said something about âdonât I wish she was still dating thugsâ instead of you.â
âYeah, he said something similar to us the other day.â
âI asked him what he was talkinâ about. Charlotte never brought any of her boyfriends around the MC. Always liked to pretend she wasnât related to us lowlife bikers.â
âCanât imagine why.â
Ignoring the dig, he continues. âHis remark didnât sit right with me.â
At our feet, Keeper groans.
He rolls and sits up, scooting in a circle until heâs facing us. âWhat the fuck, brother? Untie me.â
Merlin pulls his own hunting knife from a sheath at his side. âWe need to talk first.â
Keeperâs eyes widen and his gaze darts between Merlin and me. âYouâre siding with him?â
âIâm siding with my niece. Explain what you meant before.â
âWhat?â he asks, but by the fear in his eyes, he knows exactly what information Merlinâs after.
âCharlotte never brought any boyfriends to our clubhouse. Why do you think she did?â
âI caught her fucking one of those punks from Eighteenâs crew.â
Blood roars through my ears.
âCaught how?â Merlinâs low deadly voice should scare the piss out of Keeper, but he lifts his chin in defiance.
âYou need me to draw you a picture?â
Tired of the bullshit, I lash out, kicking Keeper in the groin. He howls and falls back, rolling to his side.
Yeah, thatâs a dirty move I normally wouldnât pull, but it seems appropriate here.
