Page 11 of Beyond Reason (Lost Kings MC 9)
âYou think she was telling the truth?â Wrath asks Z, completely ignoring me.
âI do. She was real eager. Concerned with giving us everything. Didnât try asking questions about what she heard, just told us straight.â
Murphy raises his hand. âFrom what I know about Charlotte, I believe her too.â
âBig surprise,â Bricks mutters.
âKnock it off,â Z says. âI donât think I need to break this down for you like youâre a five-year-old. SOS patching over to the Wolf Knights is a huge problem for us.â
Wrath seems to be deep in thought, drumming his fingers on the table. âWhisperâs never gonna go for that. Heâs been talking about wanting to move his club in a less risky direction.â
âWhisper went toe-to-toe with him, from what Charlotte overheard.â
âThatâs not good either,â Rock says, echoing the concerns Z laid out the other day. He pulls out a burner phone and sets it on the table. âChrist, I guess I need to warn Loco he might be getting another visit.â
As Rock says it, his phone blows up.
âYeah?â Rock answers.
âRock!â Locoâs voice comes through the speaker phone loud and clear and crazy as ever. âI bagged some big game for you today. Need you and a few of your boys to swing by and take a look.â
While I know Locoâs always paranoid about our phones being tapped by law enforcement, his âcodeâ sounds ridiculous and isnât that hard to crack.
âWas just about to call you. Weâll be there in an hour.â
Rock hangs up and shoots a glare my way. âYouâll be joining us.â He points in the direction of the garage. âTake the van in case weâre bringing bodies back with us.â
âGot it,â I answer, not about to argue with Rock over anything at the moment.
âYou gonna call their prez?â Wrath asks.
âWhat would you like me to do, look him up in the Outlaw yellow pages?â Rock shoots back. âLetâs go see what weâre dealing with first, then Iâll decide how to handle it.â
He runs down a short list of who he wants headed to Ironworks and gives instructions to everyone staying behind.
âMove,â he orders.
âPrez, Iâm gonna ride with Teller if thatâs okay,â Murphy asks.
âNo. Iâm riding with him.â He gives me a hard look. âI need more information out of him.â
Super.
Murphyâs not about to argue with Rock, so he heads into the garage with the rest of the guys.
Wrath and Z ride ahead of us, while Murphy and Dex take up the back.
Rock keeps me in suspense while I navigate to the main highway.
âThereâs more to your story, isnât there?â Rock finally asks.
âYes.â
âWeâll deal with this first, and then weâre going back to the table. Today.â
âOkay.â
âYou stick with me when we get to Locoâs.â
Loco meets us on the sidewalk out front. âDamn, forgot when all your boys are ridinâ the whole neighborhood hears you coming.â He holds out his hand and Rock takes it, pulling him in for a quick bro-hug. Something that seems to throw Loco off and make him happy at the same time.
âThanks for calling.â
âWho else am I supposed to call when a couple bikers try to rough up my girls?â
âGood point.â
He leads us inside through a door under the front stairs.
âNever used this entrance before,â Z cracks.
Loco turns and warns Wrath to watch his head. âSupposed to be a basement apartment, but Iâve found other uses for it,â Loco explains.
I can only imagine what those other uses might be.
Inside itâs dark and the faint stench of mildew clings to the air.
Behind us, thereâs a thunk and a string of curses from Wrath.
âTold you to watch your head,â Loco says without a trace of humor.
Malikâs perched on a small metal folding chair outside a closed door. He stands as soon as he sees us.
âHowâre our guests?â Loco asks.
âQuiet since our talk.â Malikâs gaze sweeps over us and he nods at Z and Dex.
âThis fucker moved like lightning,â Loco says, demonstrating some crazy move while Malik shakes his head. âLucky you were here to take them down.â
Rock turns and jerks his head at Z, Murphy, and Dex, indicating they should stay outside. Wrath and I follow him inside with Malik and Loco at our backs.
The two SOS members I met at the Wolf Knightâs picnic are sitting on the concrete floor back to back, bound and gagged.
âI know itâs not very original,â Loco says almost as an apology. âI went for easy over artistic.â
None of us bother to decode that.
âOh!â Loco says, running out of the room.
Rock raises an eyebrow and Malik shrugs. âItâs easier not to ask questions.â
Loco returns with two South of Satan leather cuts.
âWell,â Rock says, drawing the word out for maximum humiliation. âWhat kind of biker lets some gangster jerk his colors? You two even put up a fight?â
The fact that theyâre both still breathing tells me all I need to know about their dedication to their club. Only way someone takes my colors is over my dead body.
âIâll leave you boys be,â Loco says. âLet me know when youâre done so I can hose down the floor.â
The younger kid, Sticks, if I remember correctly, starts squirming, trying to break free.
Rock tilts his head, indicating he wants me to move in and help with the persuasion part of the interrogation.
âAll right. Hereâs what we know,â Rock says. âYouâre working with the Wolf Knights to move into our territory.â
Sticks drops his gaze and shakes his head.
âDonât fucking lie or this is gonna be an uncomfortable afternoon for you.â
I crouch down and take their gags off. âSticks, right?â
He nods while keeping his eyes trained on Rock.
âWhoâs your buddy?â
âThumbs.â
âShut up,â the other one hisses.
âHereâs how this is gonna go,â Rock says. âFirst one who tells me what I want to know, avoids getting a beat down from Teller.â
Rockâs a man of his word. First one to squeal will probably get hammered by Wrath or Rock.
âYeah, youâll just have that one do it.â Thumbs sneers and jerks his chin at Wrath.
âNow youâre taking the fun out of it,â Wrath says.
âHow long you been a member, Sticks?â Rock asks.
He eyes Wrath wearily before answering. âGot patched-in this year.â
âTheir vetting process obviously needs improvements,â Wrath mutters.
âThis patch-over to the Wolf Knights. That something your whole clubâs voted on? Or is it just you two geniuses?â
Neither of them answer.
Rock nods at me and since Thumbs rubbed me the wrong way the second he opened his mouth, I slam my fist into his face.
His head snaps back, hitting Sticks. Blood trickles from his nose and he glares at me. âThat the best you got?â
âJust warming up.â
âMy dadâs planning to challenge our president in the next election!â Sticks shouts.
âWell, that explains how you got patched-in,â Wrath says. âDaddy bought your way into the club?â
Thumbs starts laughing.
My boot lands on his leg. âWhatâs so funny, jackass?â
âGuess heâs not as dumb as he looks. Got it on the first try. Sticks ainât never been club material.â
âHate to break it to you, Thumbs, but neither are you.â
Rock throws out his arm, keeping Wrath back.
âHow many in your club are involved in this plan?â
âMy father, uncle, and a couple other older members,â Sticks answers.
âJesus, selling out your blood an
d your club in the same breath,â Wrath says. âIâm feeling a lot less concerned about these fools moving into Ironworks.â
Thumbs finally perks up and seems to realize one way or another this isnât going to end well for him. âIf I tell you what you want to know, will you let me go instead of turning me over to my president?â he asks.
âNow you wanna bargain,â Rock says. âHow long has this been going on?â
âWe were gonna patch over to the Vipers until your club took them out.â
âSo you went to the Wolf Knights?â
âMerlin came to us once you froze them out of Ironworks.â
âJust Merlin?â
âHe said he hadnât convinced the rest of the club yet.â
Rock turns to Wrath. âGood to know.â
âGuarantee Whisper was a hold out. He woulda recognized these punks for what they were right away.â
âAll right, letâs fill in some details. You been messing with Locoâs business. What else?â
âDadâs setting up a meth lab on the outskirts of Ironworks. We were trying to work out distribution through the Wolf Knightâs network.â
Wrath snorts. âThey donât have a network. They do business with Stumpâs club and us.â
âMaybe the Demons are branching out?â Rock suggests. âWeâll deal with that later.â
Rock gives the signal, and I haul Thumbs to his feet. Because thereâs no honor in beating a defenseless man, I untie Thumbsâ hands, then plant my fists in his face and gut.
Since Iâm still keyed up from not punching Merlin in his smug face yesterday and not fucking my girlfriend last night, beating the shit out of this little bitch is good tension relief.
He throws a few weak punches that only fire me up more.
Rock pulls me off Thumbs a few minutes later.
âI still need to call his president.â
Thumbs spits at both of us and Rock punches him in the throat, knocking him to the ground.
Wrath pulls a cell phone from Sticksâ pocket and flicks through it. âWhoâs your president?â
He groans and sits up. âTrip.â
Wrath opens the door and calls Malik over. âAre you free to drive them out to the Ironworks line and drop âem off for their prez to pick up?â
âWhatâs wrong? You donât want âem ridinâ bitch with you?â
Wrath rolls his eyes, and itâs probably a good thing we warned him ahead of time about Malikâs cheery personality.
âDidnât you tell my brother you wanted to prospect for us?â
âYeah.â
âThen be glad I didnât ask you to lick my boots before loading them up.â
I lean against the door and cross my arms over my chest. This should be good.
âYou need help, Dex can go with you.â
Dexâs startled expression clearly says what now?
âWho the fuck you think carried their asses down here? I donât need Dexter looking over my shoulder.â
âGreat. Youâre big, can carry shit, and run your mouth. You want a cookie?â Wrath sneers.
âSee,â Loco says, strolling into the room. âTold you theyâd get along great. Itâs like I got my very own Wrath salt and pepper shakers.â
Wrath answers that absurdity with an angry growl and stalks back into the room.
Z steps up to deal with Loco and Malik, and I return to see what Rock needs.
âGive me your word this ends now,â Rock says into the phone. âWe roughed âem up and weâre keeping their cuts, but our guyâs gonna dump âem off at the border for you to pick up and deal with however you see fit.â
I raise an eyebrow at Wrath who shrugs.
When Rock finishes, he doesnât even look at the two guys before walking out to talk to Loco.
âThis should be handled. Their prez isnât too happy with them, but if you notice anything unusual, let me know.â
âYou got it. Glad I could help.â
Rock holds out his hand. âThanks for all your help, Loco. Appreciate that we can always count on you.â
Behind them, Wrath wipes away a fake tear. I roll my eyes at him and he laughs.
Outside on the sidewalk, Rock pulls us in. âWe still have business to discuss,â he says, shooting me a look. âNo detours. I want everyone back at the table.â
My blood quickens.
In about half an hour, I have to decide how much of my girlâs secret I need to share with my club in order to keep her safe.
CHAPTER ELEVEN
âWell, that was a whole lot of fuckery,â Rock grumbles as we trudge into the clubhouse. âEveryone at the table. Now.â
As soon as everyoneâs seated, I focus my attention on Wrath. âNow, are you satisfied that we can trust Charlotte? Everything she said panned out.â
Not used to the disrespectful tone, he takes a second before answering me. âAm I happy she came to you right away? Yeah. Do I trust her completely now? Absolutely not.â
I stand, placing my hands on the table. âYou motherfuckerââ
Zâs hands clamp down on my shoulders, pushing me back in my seat. Iâd been so pissed I didnât notice him get out of his chair and move behind me.
Around the table, my brothers shift and murmur.
âSimmer down,â Rock says, slapping the table.
Wrathâfucker that he isâsits back, folding his arms over his chest. His way of letting me know my outburst didnât faze him.
âTeller,â Dex snaps. And Dex isnât one to usually snap. âThink about it for one second. If sheâs so quick to betray her club. Her blood. How can we ever trust her to be loyal to us?â
Nods and murmurs of agreement go around the table.
âExactly.â Wrath sits forward. âDespite what you think, Iâm not trying to be an asshole here.â
I slide my gaze over to Rock, who tilts his head, subtly asking if I get it.
Shit.
I just witnessed first hand a guy give up his club and his blood without hesitation. I understand where heâs coming from.
Looking Wrath straight in the eye, I apologize. Iâm still pissed. But I owe him that respect. âShe has her reasons.â
Wrath pins me with a help-me-to-help-you stare. âWhat are they?â
âItâsâ¦her story. And itâs ugly.â
Rock and Wrath share a look. âYou gotta give us something, Teller,â Rock says in the most mellow tone Iâve heard him use all day. âYou know this.â
âIâ¦fuck.â Everyone at the table has their eyes trained my way. Am I willing to do this? Iâm so fucking torn between my feelings for Charlotte and my loyalty to my club.
âRock, you know better than anyone how bad blood can fuck you over.â I look around the table. âWe saw it today. But almost every one of us has experienced in in one way or another. Thatâs what binds us to the club and each other, isnât it? Weâd bleed for each other.â
âIf youâre wrong about Charlotte, you willing to bleed for it?â Wrath asks.
âYes,â I answer without thinking.
Silence.
If Iâm wrong about Charlotte, Iâll most likely get my ass kicked out of the club in a painful way. Considering my knowledge of the clubâs activities and my years of access to sensitive financials, I might not make it out at all.
âGive us something,â Wrath says.
Ultimately, sharing this helps both Charlotte and my club. I just hope Charlotte sees it that way when she finds out I betrayed her.
Clasping my hands together in my lap, I stare at them for a few minutes. Remembering Charlotteâs racing pulse and trembling body when she told me her story.
She didnât make it up.
âHer second year of law school, she went to a Wolf Knight Christmas party that was only supposed to be for family. They had another club there.â
Rock shifts and sits forward, anticipating where Iâm going with this.
âWhich club?â Rock asks.
âShe doesnât know or she doesnât re
member. Iâll get to why in a minute.â
âGo on,â Z encourages.
âOne minute she was getting ready to go home. Next thing, she woke up in a bedroom half-dressed andâ¦hurt.â
âThey roofied her,â Sparky says.
âSomeone did.â
âIn her uncleâs club?â Wrathâs tone is full of disgust. âJesus Christ.â
Fuck this hurts so bad. âItâs fuzzy for her. She only remembers bits and pieces that donât make sense.â
Knowing my girl went through this and no one was there for her, makes me feel powerless. Even though it happened before we even met.
Never again.
âAnyway, she went to the hospital. It wasâ¦bad.â I canât lay out every single ugly detail for the club.
âShe press charges?â Wrath asks.
I sneer at the question. âNo. She went to her uncle thinking heâd handle it. Find out who it was and take care of it.â I pin him with a serious stare. âThe way this club would handle that situation.â
âRight on,â Stash mutters.
âAnd?â Rock asks.
âHe refused.â I swallow hard because this is the part that wrecked me the most. âBasically told her she probably enjoyed it. To stop making a big deal out of nothing.â
âSon of a bitch.â Murphyâs fist knocks against the side of my chair.
âUlfric had to be in charge then,â Rock says. âHe wouldnât have allowed that bullshit.â
âIt was the holidays. He was away, and Merlin refused to bring it to him when he got back. Iâm sure he felt it would make him look bad in front of his brothers.â
Rock shoots a glare Wrathâs way. âWho else they do business with?â
âFuck if I know. Stumpâs crew, butââ
âNo,â Rock cuts him off. âHe wouldnât tolerate that either.â He glances back to me. âGo on.â
âThatâs it. Her mother didnât want to hear about it. Merlinâs been giving her cash since her olâ man died, so she wasnât going to risk losing that.â At least thatâs the only explanation I can come up with for her motherâs shitty behavior.
I have to stop for a second. âCharlotte realized all their family-first stuff was nothing but bullshit. She may be outspoken now, but she grew up around the club. When he shut her down, she gave up.â My lips twitch into a half-smile, thinking of Charlotteâs brave âfuck youâ to the club that betrayed her.
