âNo,â I answer with what little patience I have. âI need to speak to Merlin.â
She gives me a once overâmore business than personal this timeâthen opens the door wider.
âHeâs in his office,â she says, pointing to a partially open door a few feet away. I follow her the short distance, almost knocking her over when she stops dead in front of me. âMerlin? Thereâs someone here to see you.â
âTeller?â Merlin stands. âThanks, Mady,â he says, dismissing the girl. âWhatâs on your mind?â he asks, coming closer. His steps are short, almost hesitant.
Aw, is he scared of me?
He should be.
He glances at Whisper and Hudson who both shrug.
Whisper watches me with narrowed eyes. Even if he and Merlin arenât gettinâ along right now, doesnât mean heâs going to back me if this goes badly.
âNeed to have a word with you,â I explain.
Merlin gives me an indifferent shrug. âSo, speak.â
âItâs a personal matter.â
That finally prompts him to order Whisper and Hudson to leave the office.
âYou got something to tell me about my niece?â he asks once theyâre gone.
âYou could say that.â I pull the thick envelope of cash out of my pocket and hold it out in front of me. âThis is to pay off the rest of Charlotteâs debt.â
He frowns and snaps the envelope out of my hand. âShe told you?â
âYeah, she told me the whole story.â
Merlin raises his chin, shooting a cold glare at me. âI suggest you adjust your tone when you address me.â
I stare back, harder and colder until Merlin flinches and gives in. âI donât know what she told youââ
âYes, you do.â I lower my voice and take a step closer. âYour niece. Your own flesh and blood. What the fuckâs wrong with you?â
He flinches again but tries to appear indifferent. âYou know how it is.â
âNo, I really donât. Explain to me how you let your niece get raped in your clubhouse and refused to find the fucker and gut him.â
I swear he pales as he steps back.
âMind your own business.â
âCharlotte is my business.â I watch him carefully for a few seconds, thinking over what Iâm about to say. âSheâs my old lady now. Mine. Get used to it.â
His expression locks into cold, hard anger, fists balling up at his sides. Unfortunately for him, it doesnât intimidate me one bit. âYou need to drop this. It doesnât concern you.â
âYouâre dead wrong. Everything about her is my concern.â
âChrist, Teller, it was fucking years ago.â
âWhy donât we find someone to rape you and in seven years let me know how youâre feeling about it.â
That only seems to make him angrier. âFind it hard to believe your clubâs willing to back you up.â
âThatâs my problem.â
âSheâs disloyal anyway.â
âSheâs disloyal? Why the fuck should she be loyal to you?â
âIâm her fuckinâ uncle, thatâs why!â he shouts. âHer father was my little brother.â
âYeah, bet heâd be real grateful to know how you took care of his girl.â
âYou donât know what the fuck youâre talking about.â
âWas she drugged and raped in this clubhouse or not?â
He clamps his lips shut, so I fire off another question. âDid she come to you for help and you blew her off or not?â
Ignoring both questions, he asks, âYou tell Rock, her crazy, drug-addled version of what happened?â
I donât even bother responding to his attempt to discredit Charlotte. âThis ainât about either of our clubs, and you know it.â
He steps closer and lifts his hand. I think heâs planning to poke me in the chest, but he takes one look at the glacial expression Iâm wearing and stops. âYou wanna take her on so bad? Sheâs all yours. Have fun explaining why her brotherâs homeless.â
âWhatâs Carter got to do with this?â
âIâm fucking sick and tired of carrying that kid, and now that Cindyâs gone, I donât have to. He can get the fuck out of that house.â
âHis motherâs house. Because he was taking care of her,â I remind him.
âGuess you donât know everything. Itâs my house. I let her live there because I knew she couldnât fuckinâ keep a roof over her head otherwise and I promised my brother Iâd do that.â
âYouâre gonna kick your own nephew out of his house? Right after his mom died?â
âHeâs a fuckinâ pussy whoâs never gonna be useful to anyone.â
While Carter might not be MC material, heâs a good kid. Hearing Merlin run him down makes me want to punch him in the mouth even more than I already did.
âYou do what you gotta do, Merlin.â I step back. âTell me something, do you know who hurt Charlotte that night?â
He shakes his head, refusing to look me in the eye. âNo. Donât believe the way she told it either,â he says with zero conviction. âNever did.â
âYeah, well I do.â I step closer getting up in his face. âYou wanna know why Locoâs so fuckinâ afraid of me, Merlin?â I taunt in a voice just above a whisper. âI know thatâs been driving you crazy.â
His jaw clenches, neck seizing with tension. âHeâs fuckinâ nuts, thatâs why.â
âHe ainât that crazy. No, he saw what happened to a certain snake who hurt a woman I cared about.â I pause and glance down at my hands. âWell, what was left of him.â
âThat why Charlotteâs so bent on suckinâ your dick? âCause you promised to get justice for her or some bullshit?â
Iâm so done with this asshole and issue my final warning. âOne way or another, Iâm going to find out who hurt her. You better fuckinâ pray that you didnât have anything to do with it.â
Merlinâs face darkens. âDonât you fuckinâ threaten me.â
âItâs not a threat. I protect whatâs mine.â
He stalks over to the closed office door and throws it open. âI think weâre done here.â
âYeah. We are.â
Once Iâm in my truck, I head straight to Charlotteâs to give her a headâs up about all the shit thatâs about to go down.
I donât make it that far. Iâm crossing the Empire City line when my phone rings. I press the button on my steering wheel and the call comes over Bluetooth. Charlotteâs anxious voice fills the truck. âMarcel, where are you?â
âOn my way to your place. Whatâs wrong?â Iâm not sure why I ask, I can guess whatâs coming.
âMy brother called. He said Chuck stopped by and told him he has twenty-four hours to get his shit and get out of Momâs house. Said to ask you why.â
âFuck.â That fucker moved faster than I expected.
âIâll explain when I get there.â
âMarcel,â she says, drawing out my name. âWhat did you do?â
I take the exit that leads me into downtown Empire. âIâm almost there, Charlotte.â
âPark in back. I left my car on the street.â
âThanks, Sunshine.â
Her soft laughter soothes me.
Fifteen minutes later, Iâm about to knock on her door, when she throws it open.
âWhatâs going on?â
No way am I starting this conversation without kissing her first. I wrap my arms around her, pulling her against my chest. âFirst, kiss me.â
She tips her head back, a hint of a smile playing over her lips. Her arms wind around my neck and I lean down, pressing my lips to hers, taking time to taste her, tell her with my body how much I missed her.
Before I explain Iâm the reason her brotherâs now homeless.
Painfully conscious of the cameras in her apartment, a knot of guilt tightens my stomach.
A soft sigh eases out of her when we part. She rubs the back of her hand over my cheek. âWhat happened?â
âI paid o
ff your loan to Merlin.â
All softness vanishes. âOh, Jesus Christ. I told you to let it go.â
âFuck that shit.â
âIâm not someâ¦gold digger who expects you to pay my bills.â
âTrust me, I know youâre not. Itâs not about that and you know it.â
âFine, howâd my brother get dragged into this?â
âYour uncle said some shit and I made it clear that youâre my old lady. Let him know how I felt about the way he treated you.â
She exhales a heavy sigh. âMarcelââ
âSomeone needed to stand up for you, Charlotte. Even if itâs too many years too late.â
âThank you,â she says, her voice a rough whisper.
âHe said if I was taking on responsibility for you, I could have Carter too.â
âShit.â She bites her lip. âHe wasnât planning to stay there much longer, but still.â
âIâm sorry. I swear I never thought heâd get caught up in this. All I could think about was paying your uncle off.â
âYou really didnât have to do that, but thank you.â
âIâll help Carter out any way I can.â
âHeâs going to stay here for a few days. Itâll be okay.â She looks up at me again. âYour old lady, huh? Thereâs a title I never thought Iâd want.â
I fit my hands over her hips. âBut now you do?â
âMaybe.â
âWhat can I do to convince you?â
âKiss me?â
Holding her face in my hands so she knows thereâs no escaping, I kiss her with everything Iâm feeling.
The whole time aware Z could be watching us.
CHAPTER TEN
Marcelâs no coward. As soon as my brother crashed his way into my apartment, Marcel explained what went down with Uncle Chuck.
Well, respecting my need for privacy, he gave my brother an edited version of what led to the impromptu eviction.
âWhatever, dude, itâs cool. I didnât want to be there anyway.â
âWe can take my truck over tomorrow morning and get whatever else you need. Iâll rent you a storage unit or something until you find a new place.â
Carter doesnât argue. He seems too shocked.
âThis is my fault, Carter. Iâll fix it,â Marcel promises.
It takes my brother a few minutes to come up with a simple, âThanks.â
Later that night, my tiny apartmentâs feeling more cramped than usual as I settle down and try to sleep.
Marcel pulls me into his arms, the hard length of him pressing into my back. âYou smell so good,â he says, nuzzling my neck.
âMy brotherâs like five feet away.â
âI think he knows we fuck.â
I jab my elbow in his ribs. âNot funny.â
He chuckles, jostling my body. âCan you be quiet for once?â he asks, lifting my T-shirt and grazing my hip with his rough fingers. âHmm?â
âGuys,â Carter calls out. âJust so you know. I can hear like every word youâre saying. Teller, if you could not violate my sister tonight, that would be awesome.â
I canât help bursting into giggles. Marcel rolls to his back, also laughing. âWe need to stay at the clubhouse.â
âThat works for me,â Carter yells.
âShut up and go to sleep,â I shout back.
The next morningâs a little less awkward.
âThanks for controlling yourselves last night,â Carter says when he sees Marcel.
Marcel glares at him and scrubs his hands over his face before accepting a cup of coffee from me. He leans in and presses a kiss to my cheek, then joins my brother at the table.
âSleep okay?â he asks Carter.
âOnce I was sure you werenât going to maul each other, I slept like a baby.â
âChrist,â Teller mutters. âThis is what I get for giving my sister such a hard time.â
I laugh and pat his shoulder. âFrom what sheâs told me, you have years of big brother karma to work off.â
âBy the way.â Carter points his fork at Marcel. âYou could put a shirt on at the breakfast table.â
Marcel slaps my brotherâs hand away. âBe happy I bothered with pants.â
âEww.â
Marcel sits back and chuckles, then winks at me.
âTalk about bad karma,â Carter grumbles. âI got shot down by Mercy yesterday, evicted, and now tormented by my sisterâs platinum-tongued sex God.â
âShut up,â I snap.
âIs that what you call me?â Marcel asks, sticking out his tongue and wiggling it at me.
âNo. Thatâs what Mercy calls you,â Carter says.
âBoth of you need to stop talking so I can eat my breakfast.â I set a plate in front of Marcel and one on the table for me. As soon as I take my chair, Marcel grabs one of the legs and slides it closer, wrapping his arm around my shoulders.
âNow, why does your friend call me that, Sunshine?â he asks in a low voice.
âWhat did I tell you about fishing for compliments?â
They finally, mercifully shut up so we can eat in peace.
Checking the time, Marcel nods at Carter. âHurry up. I want to get over to the house early and start loading up my truck.â
Carterâs fork clatters to the table, bit of scrambled egg flying everywhere. âYouâre really going to help me do that?â
âYeah. Unlike you, I donât just run my mouth to hear myself talk.â
I spend the rest of the morning helping Carter move the few things he actually wants to keep out of his motherâs house and into a storage unit. The whole time we were at the house, Carter kept checking the road as if he was afraid Merlin would show up any second.
He didnât.
I get a text from Rock as Iâm dropping Carter off at the apartment.
We have a situation.
Thatâs code for âget your ass to the clubhouse now.â
On my way.
Did Merlin contact Rock and tell him about our little chat? Itâd be a bitch move on Merlinâs part, but not exactly surprising.
âYouâre not coming in?â Carter asks.
âCanât. I need to get home.â
The kid almost seems disappointed. âThanks a lot for helping me. I really appreciate it.â
âLeast I could do after getting you kicked out.â
âItâs not your fault our uncleâs an asshole.â
He gives me a quick fist-bump, and I head to the clubhouse.
Murphy meets me in the garage.
âWhatâs going on?â
âSomething went down at Locoâs.â
âWhyâs that an emergency for us?â I guess itâs not so unusual for us to help Loco out, but it doesnât normally require all of us sitting down at the table.
âRock will explain it. Iâll see you inside.â
Z rides into the parking lot, and I wait for him. âFun times,â he greets me.
I hold up my hands before he says anything else. âIâm spilling everything today, right after Rock tells us what this is about.â
âThanks, brother.â He cocks his head and flashes a slight smirk. âSo, whoâs the little dude staying at her place?â
I shove him sideways. âYou asshole.â
He grins even wider. âEase up, I was fast forwarding through and saw someone that wasnât you or her. I assume itâs her little brother?â
âThat would be Carter.â
Z and I are the last ones to the table, which is unfortunate because Rockâs in a foul mood. Not a good omen considering what I have to share with my brothers today.
He doesnât wait for everyone to settle down, he just jumps right into the problem.
âLoco called. He got paid a visit by two wanna-be bikers asking a lot of questions about us.â His pissed-off glare lands on me.
âI can shed some light on that.â
Everyone at the table focuses their attention on me, which I gotta say isnât real comforting at the moment.
r />
I sit up, elbows on the table, clasping my hands in front of me.
Nothing less than the whole story will work here.
âMerlinâs been trying to dig up information on what weâre doing in Ironworks. He seems to still think itâs in play.â
âNo shit,â Wrath says.
âFuck him,â someone else adds.
âWell, when Loco didnât break, he tried to bug Charlotteâs phone.â
âWhen exactly was this?â Rock asks.
I swallow hard under the weight of his penetrating stare. âDay after the funeral. She lost her cell phone. Went back to get it and overheard some stuff.â
At this point, the only sound in the room is the air moving in and out of our lungs.
Z raises his hand, taking some of the heat off me. âHe brought me in right away.â
Hereâs where letting Z know about the bugging will save my skin.
Wrath nods, but Rock doesnât seem as forgiving. âThat so?â
âYes, Prez.â Z sits up, carefree attitude disappearing. He and Rock go way back and are tight, but in this room, Rockâs the president. Everyone knows their place. âTheyâre fucking stupid though. Put some two-bit app on her phone. Even if she hadnât overheard them, she probably wouldâve noticed it.â
âThey place something less obvious somewhere else?â Wrath asks.
âNot that I could find. I went through the phone thoroughly. Just to be sure, I had her buy a new one. Did a full sweep of her apartment and found nothing else.â
âAnd?â Rock prompts, knowing thereâs more to the story.
âTeller and I placed a few select cameras at her apartment.â
Shit, I feel like an asshole when he says it. Not that my brothers will judge me or care. It only helps my case.
Finally, Rock lightens up and sits back. âShe know about them?â
âNo.â
One corner of his mouth lifts in a wry, but not unkind way. âGood luck with that.â
âWhat else?â Wrath asks.
âWell, itâs South of Satan MC who went to visit Loco. Merlin ordered them to go back, this time wearing colors.â
âFuck me,â Dex mutters.
Z lists the rest of the information Charlotte gave us one by one.
âAw, Christ. Guess I gotta stop wanting to punch Loco every time I see him,â Rock jokes.
