âAnd Iâm an asshole.â
âSometimes,â he agrees. He circles a finger in the air, indicating the clubhouse. âWe all are sometimes. Itâs how you fix your mistakes and learn from them that matters.â
CHAPTER EIGHT
âYour uncle wants to see you, Char. You havenât been over there in forever.â
Yeah, no thanks.
My mother interprets my silence correctly. âItâs his birthday. You have to go. Weâll all go together,â she insists.
âUh, I have plans.â
âCharlotte!â My mother can be as demanding and whiny as a child when she wants her way. âYour uncle put you through that fancy-ass law school. The least you can do is spend five minutes at his birthday party.â
Birthday party my ass.
Drunken orgy is more like it.
Put me through law school is also a stretch.
He paid for my first year, and in addition to my massive student loan payments, uncle dearest also receives a check from me every month. Because fuck him and fuck owing him anything.
That fucker cashes every check too.
âMa, you know whyââ
âOh, for fuckâs sake, Charlotte. Itâs been years. Get over it.â
Her words are a painful punch in the gut. Sheâs never been there for me. Never taken my side in anything.
Iâm almost thirty frickinâ years old. Why do I still care?
âIâll go with you, sis,â Carter says from behind me. I turn and find him glaring at our mother. âIâll make sure no one bothers you.â
Thank God for Carter. Thereâs no way Iâd set foot in that place again by myself.
Momâs lips curl into a sneer. âYouâre just gonna piss Chuck off, but whatever, Carter. You think your sister needs a babysitter, by all means. Just make sure you get your ass to that party.â
âWait, arenât you coming?â I mean if itâs a family event and sheâs forcing me to go, why isnât she going?
âIâll swing by later.â
Meaning, sheâll get shitfaced and pass out. Fantastic.
âI need to run home and change.â
My mother runs her gaze over me in one quick and dismissive movement. âSomething less nerdy would be good.â
âGod forbid I donât run around with my tits hanging out,â I grumble.
Carter chuckles and takes my arm. âI have a T-shirt you can borrow.â He leads me down to his room and closes the door.
âYou really need to get your own place.â
âI know,â he says quietly as he plows through his dresser drawers. âIâm just worried if no oneâs here sheâll drown in her own puke or something one night.â
âJesus, Carter. Thatâs her problem. Not yours. I have room. Come stay with me.â
His mouth quirks to the side. âI think that would be awkward for both of us.â
âMore awkward than bringing girls home for the drunken inquisition?â
He snorts softly. âThere havenât been any girls to worry about lately.â
âWell, maybe Uncle Chucky can hook you up tonight.â
He throws a disgusted glare at me. âNo thanks.â
Damn do I love my little brother. He towers over me by quite a bit these days, but heâll always be my little brother. Even if he thinks itâs his job to be my protector.
âWeâll take my car. Let me know when youâre ready to go,â he says.
âWhat if you want to stick around?â
He tosses that glare at me again.
âNo, seriously. What if you want to hook up?â
âSis, I love you, but itâs really creeping me out that youâre so damned worried about my dick right now.â
âFuck you, you little shit.â
âYou talk like that when you go to court?â
âAll the time.â
As soon as weâre in my brotherâs car, Iâm praying the old clunker breaks down. Is that too much to ask for?
âShould we bring him something?â I ask Carter.
âFuck him.â
I couldâve predicted that answer. Iâm inclined to agree, but I donât feel like being bitched out by mother later if she deems we werenât respectful.
âCome on, stop at the liquor store, Iâll at least bring a bottle of something he likes.â
âWhatever. Like his place isnât stocked.â
He swings into the parking lot and waits in the car.
When I return, Carter inspects my purchase with a bland expression. âWhatever. Just donât drink anything there.â
âNo kidding.â I pull the bottle of seltzer I brought out of my bag. âWhy do you think I brought my own.â
âI hate this,â he grumbles, pulling out of the parking lot. âLetâs get it over with. I canât believe mom bitched at us about going and then isnât even here.â
âWeâll go, pay our respects. Sing happy birthday, grab some cake and get the fuck out.â
He holds out his fist and I tap my own against it. âDeal.â
The parking lotâs packed when we arrive.
âFuck,â Carter mumbles.
âPark out there, so we donât get boxed in,â I direct.
âYou got it.â
He finds a spot suitable for his baby. Once he shuts the car off, he leans over and flicks the glove box open, pulling out a small revolver.
âCarter, are you nuts?â
âIâm not messing around, sis.â He flashes a cheeky grin at me. âItâs not loaded.â
âYouâre an idiot. You pull that on someone, youâre going to get your ass kicked or worse.â
He rolls his eyes. âCome on, you know Uncle Chuck expects everyone to carry.â
âUncle Chuck is also a lunatic,â I point out. âApparently it runs in the family,â I mutter as he gets out of the car.
âI heard that!â he yells, making me laugh.
My family is insane.
Of course before we leave, Wrath wants all of us to meet up in the front yard. Iâm extra antsy because Heidiâs still joining us tonight. Itâs awkward for a lot of reasons.
âHeidi, they run their club different than ours. Youâre going to see some shit,â Wrath warns. âMouth shut. No judgmental faces.â
Heidi nods. Sheâd never mouth off to Wrath and I find his instructions to her fucking hilarious.
âNo one should bother you.â He nods to her property patch. âBut stick with your man.â He glances at Trinity. âIf we need to discuss business, I want you two to stick together.â
âNo problem,â Trinity says.
It finally seems to sink in that this might not be the fun party Heidi expected. She gives Murphy an uncertain look and he squeezes her hip in response.
Wrath nods at me. âI assume youâll be watching over Heidi, so stick with them.â His gaze moves to Ravage. âEyes on Trinity.â
âYou got it.â
As newer patched members, Hoot and Birch still get a lot of shit work. Wrath tasks them with keeping an eye on the girls. They donât get to tap ass tonight. I almost wish I could trade with them.
Before everyone moves to the garage, I take Heidi aside.
âHey, you all right?â
She gives me an uncertain look that kills me. Itâs not nerves from going to this party. Itâs hurt. She flicks her gaze to Murphy and gives me a half-smile. âI am a little nervous.â
I attempt a teasing tone. âWhy? You used to beg to go to these kinds of things and see what we were up to.â
âYeah, now Iâm afraid to find out.â
âYouâll be fine.â I nod to her property patch. âYouâre Murphyâs olâ lady, anyone fucks with you, they die.â
She thumps her hand against her chest. âThatâs so comforting.â
I hook an arm around her and kiss the top of her head. âThatâs the spirit.â
Murphy gives me a fist-bump before they leave.
Wrath stops me from following with a hand to the chest. âYou good?â
?
??Iâm fine. Kind of wish Rock was going.â
âMe too.â
He glances at the others and in a lower voice informs me, âI need to have a talk with Whisper. Need to find out where he stands on the rebuild of Furious.â
Surprised heâs sharing information with me about the gym, I answer with the only thing I can think of. âIs it gonna get ugly?â
âIt shouldnât.â He gestures toward my truck. âRiding or driving?â
âFuck, you know I still canât ride.â
He runs his gaze over me quickly before meeting my eyes again. âYouâre gonna ride again, brother. Youâve come a long way in a short amount of time. Thisâll be good for you.â
âWhy? You donât seem too thrilled.â
âThatâs because Iâm old and anti-social.â He pats my cheek and flashes a wide grin. âYouâre still a pretty party boy.â
If he didnât have so much seniority over me in the club and I didnât love him like a big brother, Iâd probably punch him. âStartinâ to feel like an old man.â
âI hear that. Hey,â he says, cutting his laughter short. âHeidi will be fine. She knows how to handle herself.â
âWeâll see, wonât we? Besides, sheâs Murphyâs problem. Isnât that what you keep saying?â
âGee, and here I thought you werenât paying attention.â
CHAPTER NINE
âJesus, this is way more than a simple birthday party,â I grumble at Carter as I meet him in front of his car.
He surveys the parking lot. âYou want to leave?â
âNo.â I glance at the brown paper bag in my hand. âLetâs drop this off. I donât want to listen to Momâs bitching if we donât show up.â
People are scattered throughout the parking lot, which is really more of a backyard with a lot of gravel strewn around. The occasional moan and groan reaches us as we weave through parked cars and motorcycles. Carter stays close behind me.
My own personal bodyguard.
I have to be out of my mind to set foot in this place again.
âYou okay, sis?â Carter asks in a low voice, touching my back.
âIâm fine.â
A few dark figures are clustered around the back door. I donât recognize any of them, but the shirt Carter insisted I wear, is enough to get us through the door.
Throbbing music vibrates through my shoes and a haze of smoke hangs in the air. âJust as I remember,â I mutter. A cold shiver of revulsion works turns my stomach.
âYou sure youâre all right?â Carter asks. âYou look green.â
âShitty lighting.â
âThereâs my favorite niece!â Uncle Chuck shouts.
Turning, I peer into one of the rooms on my right. Itâs a small office and Chuckâs behind the desk with one of his buddies hanging out on the other side. âHi, Uncle Chuck. We made it.â
âChar!â He stands and circles the desk, embracing me in a rib-crushing hug. âSo happy youâre here, sweetie.â
While his words sound nice, his tone, eyes, face, all of it are completely flat, cold, and lifeless. I canât tell if heâs drunk or his soul slithered out of his body for good.
Either way, I force a smile on my face and remember to wish him a happy birthday. âWe brought this for you.â I hand over the brown bag and his grin widens when he pulls the bottle of whiskey out.
âThat was very nice of ya, Char. Thanks.â
âHappy birthday, Uncle Chuck,â Carter says in a respectful tone, even though I know heâd be happier telling our uncle to fuck off.
He barely glances at Carter, giving him a perfunctory nod as if Iâd brought some random guy with me instead of his nephew. After circling his desk, he drops into his chair and opens the bottle. âYour momma stopping by, Char?â he asks, pouring the whiskey into a mug.
âShe said sheâd be here a little later.â
âGood. Thatâs good. She needs to get out of the house more.â
If by âout of the houseâ he means âdrag her ass to an AA meetingâ then yes, she should get out more. I force out a sound of agreement.
âI worry about her,â he says more seriously.
âYou should stop by more often.â Carterâs voice comes out free of sarcasm, but our uncle still throws a scowl at him.
Ignoring my brother, Uncle Chuck focuses on me. âShe get those repairs done?â
âAs far as I know, yes. Carter really knows more about it since he lives there.â
âYour guy did good work.â Carter steps up next to me. âMom tipped him in her own special way.â
I elbow my brother in the ribs and he backs off.
âIâll have a talk with him,â Chuck says, waving his hand in the air. He takes a healthy sip from his chipped mug and nods at the open door. âGot a lot of folks visiting tonight.â His face cracks into a creepy smile and he points at my chest. âKeep your shirt on.â
The smile tightens on my face. âWill do, Uncle Chuck.â
âKeeperâs daughter is here. She was looking forward to seeing you,â he adds. If heâs trying to make me feel guilty for avoiding this place for so long, heâs out of luck. Although, I am excited to see my old friend.
âGreat, Iâll go look for her.â
âGood girl,â he says and I barely stop myself from flipping him off.
âWhatâs wrong with you?â I hiss at my brother once weâre out of Chuckâs office. âYou probably got the guy who helped Mom out killed.â
His shoulders lift as his eyes scan the room, giving me the impression heâs not listening. âIf he doesnât want Mom sleeping with every guy who gives her a peek of plumberâs crack, he shoulda claimed her ass years ago.â
Now thereâs a mental image Iâll never be able to scrub from my brain. âGross. Itâs bad enough having him for an uncle. You really want him as a step-father?â
He pretends to consider the question before shaking his head.
âCome on,â I urge, dragging him into the room. âHelp me find Liberty. Sheâs the only one in this dump Iâm actually excited to see.â
âThink she turned out as hot as her mom?â
âYouâre twisted.â
He flashes a grin but doesnât disagree. His gaze scans the room. âIâll be in a dark corner watching out for you.â
âIf you werenât my brother that would be totally creepy.â
He chuckles. âI always got your back, sis.â
My anxiety eases for the first time tonight. I glance at my wrist as if Iâm wearing a watch and he does the same. âLetâs sync our watches. One hour until departure.â
He grins at me. âDeal.â
CHAPTER TEN
Even if inviting us here was meant to be a friendly gesture, Iâm not willing to risk getting shitfaced on a rival clubâs turf, so I chose seltzer tonight. Murphy would never risk drinking and riding, so heâs been nursing a Coke.
Bless my sister, but she seems to be taking her role here seriously. She hasnât opened her mouth once unless asked something directly.
Merlin stumbled out of his office and flopped into the chair across from us a few minutes ago. While Iâm trying to pay attention to his plans for ârestructuringâ their Slater County turf, Iâm also doing my best to ignore Murphyâs hand up the back of my sisterâs shirt. Heâs just brushing his thumb over her skin. Itâs a casual gesture. Like he has the right to touch her so intimately. Like he does it all the time.
Which is why itâs so fucking annoying.
She must sense the impending explosion of my head. Heidi circles her fingers around his wrist and pries his hand off her before turning to me. She doesnât ask if Iâm okay, she knows better in this setting, but her eyes are full of concern. She gave me shit when I explained there was no fucking way Iâd bring my cane into this clubhouse tonight.
Jesus, I love her. And I hate that we brought her here. I never wanted her to be part of this stuff.
Just because I chose this life doesnât mean I wanted it for her.
&n
bsp; Iâm still rattled from the stuff she admitted to me yesterday. The stuff she screamed at me. I always knew something wasnât right between her and Axel, but in the back of my head, part of me was also relieved heâd get her away from club life.
Now that I know how bad things were, fuck that he tried to talk her into an abortion, not once but multiple times?
Pissed isnât adequate.
Even though less than twenty-four hours ago she was spitting mad and screaming at meârightfully soâshe gives me a soft smile. âDo you need a refill?â she asks, nodding at my glass.
She stands and braces herself on Murphyâs legs, leaning in to kiss him before taking our glasses.
âHow bad did he kick your ass for hooking up with his sister?â Merlin asks, laughing like a moron at his own question.
A slow smile spreads over Murphyâs face. âWorth it.â
Merlin opens his mouth, and I sit forward, nailing him with a warning glare. âSheâs young to already have patched her, no?â Merlin asks instead of whatever dirty question he was considering.
Murphy shrugs. Neither of us are going to say sheâs been around the club her whole life. No need to give either of them the idea that sheâs here as anything other than Murphyâs pretty little lap decoration tonight.
When she returns, she hands Murphy his glass first, then hands me my seltzer.
âCome here, sweetheart,â Merlin says. She glances at Murphy and gets a nod before taking a step closer to the Wolf Knightsâ prez.
He reaches out, running his fingers over the patches on the side of her vest.
The back of the vest announces sheâs âProperty of Murphyâ and the name of our MC. The side holds the smaller patch of each Lost Kings MC officer in our chapter.
Technically heâs not touching Heidi. His fingers barely graze the patches. Doesnât matter. Next to me, Murphy coils tight. I set my seltzer down and sit up in case things get ugly.
Merlinâs fingers stop on the black and blue nautical star patch that indicates Wrath voted Heidi in as an olâ lady. âYou guys take a vote on the old ladies, right? Not do it some other way?â
