Page 8 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
Barf, I canât think of anything I want to do less than go judge-hunting. Even if it is the hottest, yet most terrifying judge in Empire County.
I flash a tight smile. âSounds good.â
All I can think about is how I wish Iâd said more to Marcel.
And wonder if Iâll have another chance.
More and more people show up at our clubhouse as afternoon turns to evening.
Tonight, most of our visitors are from downstateâSwayâs club. Some from one of our other charters. All Lost Kings, but somehow not the same. Rock, Wrath, and Murphy are absent. Z and Dex just look irritated. The rest of my brothers are up to the usual antics.
Lots of muffler bunnies followed the guys up here. Not an olâ lady in sight.
The chaos around me matches the chaos in my head. Iâm numb but havenât had anything to drink yet.
I consider asking Murphy to come over, but he wonât want to leave Heidi. For the first time in my life, I donât blame him.
If Mariella hadnât died, would I be upstairs with her now? Watching a movie with her curled up by my side?
Would I prefer that?
Iâm not sure.
I wish she had the chance though.
As Iâm considering all of this, another name keeps repeating at the back of all my other thoughts. Iâm a mess and have no business even thinking of getting involved with a woman right now.
The more I try to push it away, the louder it is.
Charlotte.
Whatâs she doing tonight?
Whoâs she doing it with?
CHAPTER SEVEN
Recently, Rockâs insisted that at least once a week, the whole clubâold ladies and any of our regular girls includedâsit down to dinner together. Especially since Rock, Wrath, and Murphy have moved out of the clubhouse.
Even Sparky and Stash find their way out of the basement to the dinner table after Swan went downstairs to remind them what day it was.
Z strolls in last and bear hugs me from behind.
âGet off me, fucker.â
He plants a sloppy kiss on my cheek. âHow you been, little brother?â
âI was fine until you slobbered all over me.â
Fucker just laughs and turns to Heidi. âLet me see the princess.â
Heidi laughs softly while she hands Alexa to him.
âWhoâs your favorite uncle?â he asks, pressing kisses to her cheeks.
She squeals and tries to lunge out of his hold toward me.
âI guess thatâs her answer,â I say, holding out my arms. âSheâs already smart like her mom.â
Next to me, Heidi snorts.
âWeâll see,â Z says, sitting next to me and holding out his palms for Alexa to slap.
âItâs not a competition,â Heidi scolds.
âNot a close one,â I mutter and Heidi smacks my arm.
âShe loves everyone equally.â
Across the table, Trinity snickers, but doesnât add to the discussion. Z catches her eye. âWhen are you two going to get on the baby thing?â
âNever,â she and Wrath answer at the same time.
Hope chuckles and Rock gives Z a look that clearly says âdonât even bring that bullshit my way.â
Dinnerâs not fancy. Just our little club family catching up with each other. Itâs not something Iâd say out loud, but I look forward to these nights. Being surrounded by family means Iâm not drowning in the sucking blackness that seems to pull me under every day. I suspect Rockâs weekly dinner ritual was more about luring me out of my room on a regular basis than catching up with everyone.
After dinner, Sparkyâs eager to get back downstairs to his plants. He practically begs Hope to come with him so he can show her one of his new crops. Wrath and Trinity end up leaving with them.
Heidiâs busy cleaning Alexaâs face when Murphy stands and stretches. Rock eyes the three of us thoughtfully. âHold up,â he says. His gaze strays to me, keeping me in my chair.
âNeed you two to do a favor for the club.â As usual, Rock gets right to the point.
Heidi pushes her chair back. âIâll goââ
âNo. Stay, I want you to hear this.â Rock glances at me again, then back to Murphy. âWolf Knights invited us to their clubhouse tomorrow night. Supposed to be a family event. Wrath and Trin are going, Ravage, Dex, some of the others. I canât make it.â He focuses on Murphy. âI want you to take Heidiââ
âNo fucking way,â I interrupt.
All three of them glare my way.
Christ, now I have no say over anything?
âWhat do you need me to do, Uncle Rock?â Heidi asks with too much enthusiasm for my liking.
The corners of Rockâs mouth twitch into a hint of fatherly pride. âNothing major. Listen to the conversations around you. See what you can find out from the other old ladies. Any mention of Wolf Knights in Iron Works or working with other clubs.â
âAny specific names you want me to listen for?â she asks.
âIf you hear another club name, make a note of it.â He pins her with a this is serious stare. âYouâre not asking questions. Just listening.â
She nods once. âI can do that.â
âI know you can.â
âRock,â I protest. âI really donât think she should beââ
âMarcel, Iâm fine.â She swings her gaze back to Rock. âMost likely, theyâll assume Iâm young and dumb.â
Rockâs mouth curls into a smirk. âYouâre anything but, which is why I trust you to do this.â
Heidiâs beaming from ear to ear by now. âThank you.â
âWhat about me, Prez?â Murphy asks.
âMake sure Wrath doesnât kill anyone.â Rock doesnât laugh. âYou know Whisper pretty well, feel him out.â Rock glances my way next. âI assume you want to go too?â he asks, nodding at my sister.
I smother the sarcastic âya think?â forming on my tongue and answer my president with respect. âYes.â
âGood. Once the olâ ladies head home, find yourself a half-way smart bunny to butter up. Family event or not, theyâll show up eventually.â
Heidi wrinkles her nose which makes me laugh. âNot so much fun now, is it, little sister?â I ask.
âAre you sure Hopeâs okay watching Alexa all night?â Heidi asks Rock, ignoring me.
He waves the question off. âWeâre fine, Heidi.â
Not that anyone asked me, but if Alexaâs staying anywhere, Iâm glad itâs with Hope.
âMeet with Wrath, see when he wants to leave. Follow his lead.â Are the last instructions we get from Rock before he heads out. In search of Hope no doubt.
Still irritated about my sister being brought into club business, I glare at Murphy.
âWhat?â
Heidiâs gaze darts between us. âIâm going to clean Alexa up,â she says.
Murphy watches her leave, then swings his gaze my way. I open my mouth and he holds up a hand, stopping me. âListen, I get that youâre not cool with Heidi going to a Wolf Knightâs party, but sheâll be fine.â
âYou realize youâre taking responsibility for her in front of their whole crew? She fucks up, we all look bad.â
He looks at me as if Iâm stupidâwhich is exactly what Iâm being. My sisterâs smarter than that. Iâm not sure why the hell Iâm so pissed off. Itâs more than just bringing her with us.
âNo shit. What the hellâs wrong with you?â
âNothing. Youâre right. Itâs a small gathering. Better to test her there instead of after youâre even more tangled up with her.â
Anger pinches his face. I definitely struck a nerve. âTangled up with her?â He drops the question in a low voice. The one Blake uses right before he snaps and beats the shit out of someone.
âWhy arenât you more pissed with her?â
He glares at me and shakes his head.
Blakeâs not stupid. He knows exactly what Iâm referring to. âWhy are you bringing this up now?â/> Fuck it, Iâm probably as confused as he is. Even though Iâve tried to be okay with them as a couple, there are a few things I canât wrap my head around.
When I donât answer, he pushes into my space and lowers his voice. âWhat would you like me to do, Marcel? Punish her for a mistake she made when she was eighteen and scared out of her damn mind? Make her life miserable? Is that what you want for Heidi? Is that the kind of man you think I am?â
No. Thatâs not what I want at all. And I know heâd never do anything to make her unhappy.
Still, I canât seem to stop myself from twisting my knife of half-truth into my best friendâs chest. âCome on, man. We both know if Axel were still alive, she wouldnât be with you. Youâre okay with that?â Unlike Blake, I donât bother keeping my voice down.
My words might have finally earned me the punch I deserve from him, but just in time to hear the last shitty bit of it, Heidi marches into the room. The shock and hurt on her face guts me. But I still donât expect her hand to come flying at my face. The blow she lands on my cheek actually knocks me off balance.
âHow dare you. That is not true,â she spits out.
Stunned stupid, I canât come up with much of a reply that doesnât make me sound like a ten-year-old. âYou werenât invited into this conversation, little sister.â
âSticking your nose where it doesnât belong is my invitation.â She jabs a finger in my chest. âAnd you donât know shit.â
I canât think of a time when Iâve seen my sister this angry. Not at me.
âNo? When his year in Alaska was up, you and Axel would have come home.â I stop and point at Murphy. âAnd made his life miserable again.â
Murphy moves in closer, but Heidi steps between us, getting right in my face. âYouâre such an asshole,â she hisses. âYou want the fucking truth, big brother?â She all but screams the words in my face. âAxel wasnât planning to come home. He wanted to take another job even farther away. Our marriage was over. We were done.â In a softer voice, she adds, âI loved him, but marrying him was a huge mistake.â
âYeah, but you went ahead and did it anyway, didnât you?â I yell back, because, fuck am I still pissed with her.
âI was trying to do the right thing for my daughter!â she shouts. Murphy wraps his hands around her waist and pulls her against him, but she doesnât even seem to notice.
Sheâs silent for a few seconds, then blows out a breath and swipes a few tears off her cheeks. Shit, I hate that I made her cry. âDid you know he kept trying to talk me into an abortion even after we got married?â she whispers. âDid you know heâd ignore Alexa when she cried?â she asks a little louder. âThat he rarely lifted a finger to help me out with her? That up in Alaska, he wanted to hang with his buddies more than us?â
âNo, Iââ
âAfter your accident, I went home and tried to make things work with him. But it was never going to work because he lied to me the entire time. He had no intention of ever coming home. The last time I saw him alive, we fought.â She lets out a harsh sob and I can almost feel the guilt weighing her down. âI knew we were done then,â she finishes miserably.
All the pain and grief of everything my sisterâs been through ripples over her face, leaving me raw and uncertain. So, of course, I continue to needle her.
âThat was your choice. You married him when you shouldnât have. You didnât tell anyone it was that bad. Everyone in this clubhouse would have come up there and helped you move back home. But you didnât tell anyone!â
âYouâre right, I didnât,â she answers calmly. âIâm not blaming anyone else. Itâs my fault.â
Iâm so torqued it takes me until now to notice Alexa isnât with my sister. âWhereâs Alexa?â
She glares back. âWith Hope. I wanted to come back here and talk to you about tomorrow night.â
âOh,â I say stupidly.
âIâm glad sheâs not here. I hate that you forced me to talk about my daughterâs father that way. I donât ever want her to know she wasnât anything other than one-hundred percent wanted and loved by both her parents.â
Shit.
âShe is loved.â I jab a finger in Murphyâs direction and then at her. âHer parents do love her. I love her. Everyone here loves that girl. You shouldâve said something,â I insist, like the asshole she accused me of being. I should apologize to my little sister, who I love more than anyone, but I canât form the words.
âI love you, Marcel. Youâre the one personâuntil todayâwhoâs never let me down.â She glares at me. âWhether you can handle it or not, Iâve loved Blake for as long as I can remember.â She lowers her voice. âIf you ever question how I feel about him againâyou and I are done.â She chokes on the last word.
Murphy tries to comfort her, but she only accepts a quick hug. He kisses her cheek and whispers something in her ear, keeping his eyes on me the entire time.
As soon as she clears the room, all softness vanishes from my best friendâs face. âWas that necessary?â
âDid you know all of that?â
He shakes his head. âUnless she wants to talk about it, I donât bring it up. I donât see the point in hurting her.â
Once again, my best friendâs capable of more maturity than I am. Whyâd I even get out of bed this morning? To hurt the people I care about the most?
I need a fucking do-over.
Unwilling to admit how much of an asshole Iâve been, I grin and shrug. âWell, at least you know how she feels about you now.â
He sucks in a deep breath and takes a step closer. âWeâre not kids anymore. I donât need you fighting my battles.â
âIâmââ
âI donât need your help.â He slaps one hand over his chest. Over his heart. âI know how she feels about me. You need to back the fuck off. Stop trying to help me or protect me or whatever the fuck you think youâre doing. Enough is enough. Stay out of our relationship.â
âI donât wantââ
He sighs and gives me a look full of impatience. âI love you. Youâre my brother. Family. For most of my life.â
âI canât standââ I try again.
The calm expression heâs wearing vanishes. Something much more pissed-off takes its place. âIâm a big boy. I can take it.â He glances down at his hands, flexing his fingers for a few seconds before finally looking up at me. âIâm done asking your permission to be with your sister. Sheâs mine. My olâ lady. Soon, my wife. The mother of my children. Whatever you need to do to wrap your head around it, do it quick. Because if you ever upset her like that again, Iâll take your fucking head off. Donât test me on this. Not with her.â
We stand there glaring at each other.
âAre we clear?â Murphy growls.
âEverything all right in here?â Rock asks, striding into the room, wearing his whose ass do I need to kick face.
Murphy doesnât take his eyes off me. âI think weâre cool, Prez.â
Shame slides over my skin for the way I acted, but I keep my face neutral. I turn and find Hope holding Alexa and Heidi watching the three of us.
Rock jerks his head toward the door, giving Murphy the signal to leave.
Once weâre in the dining room alone, I face Rock.
âI take it you heard all that?â
Rock nods. âHard not to.â He slaps a hand on my shoulder and steers me down the hallway and into the War Room, closing the door behind us. He all but shoves me into Wrathâs chair and takes his usual seat. âWhatâs going on with you?â
I open my mouth even though Iâm not sure what excuse will roll off my tongue. Rock holds his hand up, cutting me off.
âThink on it a minute.â
âButââ
âNo. Seriously, for once in your life, take a second and actually use the gray matter taking up space between your ears before you open that big mouth.â
Thatâs a much longer warning than Iâd normally get before Rock wraps his hands
around my neck.
I keep my mouth shut.
âYou voted yes,â he says after a minute where I donât come up with anything.
âI was thinking about the club. Not myself.â
âRight. Which is what youâre supposed to do.â He cocks his head to the side. âShe suddenly bad for the club now?â
âNo.â
âSo you think antagonizing your brother is good for the club?â
âNo.â
Christ, I sound as petulant and whiny as I did when I first met Rock.
âI hate that I didnât protect her better,â I finally blurt out.
He heaves out a sigh as if heâs relieved I got it on the first try.
âThat was some tough shit to hear, Marcel,â he says gently. âI get it.â He looks me in the eye. âI really do.â
âNow she says things with Axel were worse than I even thought.â
âYou were in the hospital recovering, she didnât want to upset you.â
âSo she talked to you?â
He glances away and nods. âReally she talked to Hope.â
âOh.â A twinge of guilt pricks me.
Rock taps the table to get my attention. âYou mad I want her to go to this party?â
âI guess.â
âHow long have I known you, Marcel?â
âI donât know. Since I was twelve.â
âYou trust me?â
âOf course I do.â
âYou trust Murphy?â
âWith Heidi? Yeah,â I admit grudgingly. Murphy did just threaten to beat the shit out of me if I ever made her cry again.
He nods slowly and sits back. âYouâve carried a big burden for a long time.â
âI never minded.â
âDidnât say that. But you never got to be a kid. Shit, at that age I was busy trying to seduce my babysitter. You were taking care of your baby sister and your buddy, remember?â
âI remember.â How could I forget?
Rock doesnât laugh. Instead, he sighs. âIâve been hard on you sometimes, yeah?â
My mouth quirks into a youâre kidding smirk.
âEven when you were a kid, you took things so seriously. I think I was hard on you because I wanted you to see the bigger picture.â
