Page 34 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
âReally, theyâve been lucky we let them operate this long,â I say.
Rock glances over. âAlways figured thereâs enough criminal pie to go around. And both those clubs dealt in stuff we didnât want to touch, but Iâm done fucking around with these sloppy motherfuckers.â
âYou want to look into pushing into Slater County?â
Weâre not a large organization, but we donât need to be. By reputation alone, people know not to fuck with us. Weâve never had an issue dominating the areas we claim. Pushing the Wolf Knights out of Slater County could get bloody and Iâm surprised Rockâs willing to go there.
âNot yet,â he finally answers. âBut if heâs bringing in an out-of-state club and stirring trouble for no reason, weâll have to address it.â
âI couldnât get a read on what SOS was doing there. They were regular patch-holders, though. Not officers.â
Rock nods. âThatâs what Murphy said.â
âOne looked barely old enough to ride, let alone be in a club.â
Rock slows the vehicle down as we approach the one-way street in downtown Ironworks where Loco runs his âescortâ business.
âCould be a one-off job heâs paying them to do.â Rock stops and maneuvers the truck into a spot in front of Locoâs brownstone. âWhatever it is, he better not be fucking with our shit. We need to make it clear Ironworks isnât up for grabs.â
Fantastic. One war ends and another one begins.
One of Locoâs girls opens the door and leads us inside. No one would ever mistake this place for anything other than a whorehouse. Lacy curtains, hot pink couches, thick pink carpet, all soaked in gallons of expensive perfume.
I glance at the girls hanging out in the living room as we walk past. At least Locoâs girls are happy, over eighteen, and here by choice. Nothing like the shit Mariella went through under the boots of the Vipers.
And I know for a fact if anyone harms his girls, Loco handles it. Happy whores earn more money, is how he explains it to anyone who dares to call him soft. Then he probably fires a bullet into their leg.
Rock stops and rolls his shoulders before going through the door the girl opens for us.
âLoco,â she calls out. âTheyâre here.â
He glances up and grins when he sees Rock. His smile falters when his gaze lands on me.
âThanks, Felicia.â
When she doesnât leave, he raises an eyebrow.
âUh, I need to leave early toââ
âYeah, yeah. Tell Jazz to watch the door.â
âThank you.â
âRock North,â Loco greets in a booming voice, holding his arms wide. âThanks for coming down off the mountain.â
Iâm close enough to catch Rock counting to ten under his breath and almost laugh.
Loco waves his hand at the door. âNever hire girls with kids, man. Always asking for time off. School plays, doctor appointments. Jesus Christ, it never ends.â
This time I canât stop myself from ducking my head and laughing.
âYou said you might know something about the theft at Crystal Ball,â Rock prompts, clearly uninterested in Locoâs management problems.
âYeah, yeah. I got a guy down on Third Street. Runs a pawn shop. He had some clowns bring a shitload of parts in.â
âTo a pawn shop?â I ask.
âRight. He figured they had to be stolen and didnât want any part of it, but he ainât about calling the cops, you know? So he asked me and I immediately thought of your situation.â
âThank you,â Rock says because for once Loco dragging us down here might actually be useful.
Loco hands over a piece of paper. âThatâs the address. Place is Lucky Ducky Pawn.â
âSeriously?â I ask.
âMy guy, Malik, runs it.â He slides his gaze to Rock. âHeâs a stoic motherfucker so youâll get along great. A lot like Wrath. Heâs like the black Wrath!â Loco cracks up at his joke and even Rock chuckles. âOh, man you shouldâve brought him, Rock. Those two dudes in the same room would be funny as shit.â
When he stops laughing, he elaborates. âIâm taking a page from you and hiring him as my enforcer.â
Rock doesnât bother explaining that Wrath is a brother, not an employee. âYeah?â
Loco nods and leans back on his desk. âSome of my girls wanna do outcalls, but it ainât safe, you know? Canât have some dude jumpinâ âem or refusing to pay or whatever. So, Iâm sending Malik along.â
âSeems sensible,â Rock says.
âNot to watch, you understand? Insurance. So the girls can explain, âsee that big black dude? I donât come out unharmed with a fist full of cash in one hour, heâs gonna fuck you up.â
âI get it,â Rock says, clearly wanting to get out of here.
Loco taps his desk and tips his head sideways. âI got more outcalls than Malik can handle. You think I could hire some of your boys as protection?â
I know Rock well enough to know guarding hookers is the last thing he wants to do, so Iâm curious how heâll answer. âA few of our guys might be interested. Iâll bring it up at our next meeting.â
Loco nods, but I donât think thatâs the answer he was hoping for. âIâll let you two get going. If Malik gives you shit, tell him I sent you.â
âCanât wait,â Rock says with about the same enthusiasm as he used with the cop that pulled us over earlier. âAnything else?â
âYou got a shipment for me soon?â
âIâm working on it. You go through the last one already?â
âYeah man. Weed trade is on fire.â He laughs again and I wonder how much of his inventory Locoâs been indulging in lately.
âIâd offer you one of the girls, but you two are like fuckinâ monks,â Loco says, putting his arms around both our shoulders. Man, Locoâs living dangerously today. âYouâre not even married, right?â he asks me.
âI can find my own pussy, thanks.â
Rock chuckles.
Once weâre free from Locoâs clutches and in the truck, Rockâs rumbling laughter fills the interior. âCanât wait to tell Wrath how much Loco missed him.â
âAt least heâs speaking to me again.â
âGood, maybe Iâll start sending you to deal with him from now on.â
I open my mouth to say âno thanksâ then remember what Wrath said about us stepping up more. âI will if you need me to.â I glance back at the house. âWhoâs on your shortlist for the protection work?â
âWhy, you want the gig?â
âFuck no.â
He puts the truck in gear. âYou think Charlotte will be mad?â
Heâs testing me. Weâre not supposed to let our women interfere with club business. âDonât know. Iâll do it if the club needs me to.â
âI know you will.â His hands tighten on the steering wheel. âWeâre already supposed to be babysitting Swayâs porn star next month.â
âChrist, thatâs still happening?â
âApparently.â
We pull up to the Lucky Ducky Pawn Shop, ending the discussion of the clubâs new venture into the babysitting hookers and porn stars business.
Ironworks is in the middle of a business revival. Third Street, in the heart of downtown, is an interesting mix of barber shops, trendy restaurants, and pawn shops. The Lucky Ducky stands out with a giant neon yellow duck in the window with the slogan âWe Pay Moreâ in blinding neon blue. The other window is filled up with more bright, blinking signs announcing, âWe Pay More!â
âLooks like weâre missing out on a prime business opportunity, Prez.â
He snorts. âYou want to spend your days sorting through peopleâs trash because I sure donât.â
The guy behind the counterâs busy reading but stands when we enter. As promised, heâs a big dude. Easily Wrathâs size with dreadlocks that fall to his waist.
âCan I help you?â he asks in a voice that sounds more like âget the fuck out of my shop.â
âLoco s
ent us.â
Youâd think the guy would ease up, but he doesnât. He eyes our patches and sneers. âHow can I help you, Bubba?â
Rock gives me a sideways glance. âItâs Rock.â He holds his hand out and the guy reluctantly takes it.
âMalik.â He turns to me and lifts an eyebrow. âBubba number two.â
âTeller,â I introduce myself.
âLoco said you had someone bring in parts?â Rock prompts.
âYeah. Two dudes. Looked like typical college-boy frat-bros.â
âNot bikers?â Rock asks.
âSincerely doubt it.â
Thatâs disappointing. Although, I guess college kids being stupid is better than another club encroaching on our territory.
âYou get their names?â
âNo, but I got a number.â He hands it over and Rock stuffs it in his pocket. âIâll let Z deal with that.â He holds out his hand to Malik. âThanks. Appreciate it.â
âTell me, Prez.â Malik crosses his tree-trunk size arms over his chest. âYour club got any folks of color?â
A slow smile spreads over Rockâs face because Iâm pretty sure heâd been expecting this. âActually, yes.â
Malik raises an eyebrow and I understand why. But Rock judges people based on a number of things and skin color has never been one of them. He dislikes everyone equally. Just like the rest of us.
âYou ride?â Rock asks.
âYeah.â
âOnly thing Iâm concerned with is your loyalty and how hard of a worker you are. Rest doesnât mean shit.â He pulls out a card and tosses it on the counter. âIf youâre serious and not dicking me around, stop over at Crystal Ball and talk to Z. Two years of prospecting and even then itâs not a guarantee youâll get voted in.â
âYeah? Any white boys not make the cut?â
Rock jerks his thumb in my direction. âHis sisterâs boyfriend.â Sure, Murphy had personal reasons for voting Axel down, but itâs true.
The rest of Malikâs hostility seems to evaporate. âLocoâs got a high opinion of you.â He twirls a finger near his head. âBut dude is crazy.â
âWeâve been doing business together for a long time.â
They talk a little longer about the pawn shop and the revitalization of downtown Ironworks. A name catches my eye outside. Tiny hole-in-the wall restaurant. Nibbles. Iâm pretty sure itâs the place Charlotte sent me a picture from.
Rock and Malik wrap up their conversation and this time Malik extends his hand to both of us.
Outside, I snap a picture of the restaurant and send it to Charlotte.
Thinking of you.
Rock tilts his head. âGoing into the donut business?â
Heat creeps up my neck. âUh, Charlotte likes this place,â I explain.
One corner of his mouth curls up but he doesnât ask any follow-up questions.
Back in the truck, Rock shakes his head. âJesus. Just what I need, two Wraths.â
âReady to get on the road and away from club stuff for a few days, Prez?â
âFuck yes.â
âHope excited about the trip?â
The corners of his mouth curve up in the same soft smile he reserves for Hope. âThink so.â
My phone shakes to life in my hand and I check the message.
âEverything all right?â Rock asks.
âMariellaâs headstone was finished.â I swallow hard before continuing.
âIâm sorry,â Rock says.
âI hate asking, but do you mind if we stop at the cemetery on our way back?â
âOf course not.â
Weâre quiet on the drive. Unfortunately, Rock knows the way to the cemetery well.
Before the final turn, he stops at a small store. A few minutes later, he emerges with two bouquets of roses. He hands them to me without explanation.
A few miles later, he expertly guides the truck to the row where Mariella rests, even though as far as I know, heâs only been here once before. âToo many of our people here,â he says as if heâd read my mind and Iâm glad he considers Mariella one of us. She wouldâve liked that.
He takes the yellow roses from me and silently we walk together to Mariellaâs headstone.
âDo you want a few minutes alone?â Rock asks once weâve spent a respectable amount of time.
âNo. Iâm okay.â I set the flowers down and rest my hand against the stone for a second before following Rock.
We donât head toward his cage though. Rock meanders through the rows of headstones toward the older part of the cemetery. Curious about who he wants to visit, but not wanting to bother him, I remain silent at his side.
A few minutes later, I have my answer.
GRACE REGINA NORTH
Beloved mother and wife.
âShe was really young,â I comment after a quick mental calculation.
Rock nods, but keeps staring at the stone. Eventually, he leans over and places the roses at the base. âYellow roses were her favorite. I did my damndest on her birthday to find them for her.â
Doesnât surprise me that he wouldâve done something like that as a kid for the mother who meant everything to him. Thatâs the kind of man Rock is now. The kind heâs been trying to teach me to be since I was twelve.
CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR
Eager to get home because I know Marcelâs waiting for me, Iâm irritated to find a delivery truck parked in front of my place. As Iâm about to drive around the block and look for something else, two guys in gray come out of my building. Marcel follows them down the front stairs, slaps a few dollar bills into one of the guyâs hands before they climb into the truck.
Intrigued, I hurry to slip my car into the spot they vacate.
Marcel swaggers over when I turn my car off and opens my door. âHey, Sunshine.â
âWhat were those guys doing?â
âItâs a surprise.â He takes my briefcase from me and captures my hand in his.
âWhat did you do?â I ask as we step into my apartment. Nothing seems amiss in the living room. I drop my purse on the couch and continue down the hallway.
Then stop dead in my tracks at my bedroom door.
âYou bought me a bed?â Iâm rooted to that spot, mouth hanging open staring at the monster-sized bed taking up more than half my bedroom. Itâs too nice to belong in my apartment. âYou threw my old bed away? What if it had sentimental value?â I tease to cover up my surprise.
âIt had dust bunnies.â He cocks his head. âYou really donât like it?â
No, I donât want him thinking that at all. âI love it. Iâm surprised. Thatâs all.â
He lifts one shoulder. âI donât have a key to give you, so I bought you a bed.â
âFlowers wouldâve worked too.â
âThis will last longer.â Jerking his chin toward the bed, he invites me to examine it a closer. âSee the padded headboard and sturdy wood construction.â He leans down, brushing his lips against my ear. âSo I can fuck you as hard as I want without your neighbors yelling at us.â
âOh.â Desire swirls through me. Everything this man does. Everything he says is just so damn perfect.
Crude, but somehow still perfect.
His arms slip around my waist, and he presses himself against my back. âGonna tie you to that headboard too.â
I shake my head, unsure of whether Iâd enjoy that. âI prefer your hands keeping me in place.â
He growls next to my ear. âI like that.â
Someone rings my doorbell, pulling us apart.
âFuck,â Marcel mutters, following me to the living room.
Itâs one of the delivery guys. âForgot to have you sign this,â he says, thrusting a paper at Marcel.
He signs the form and slams the door shut. âWhere were we?â
âCan we talk for a minute?â
I pull back, studying her face. âI thought we were doing something else.â
She huffs out an annoyed breath and presses her hand again
st my chest, pushing me backward.
She canât seriously be pissed about the bed. Can she?
Whateverâs on her mind, she wants to discuss in the living room.
Thatâs okay because after she pushes me onto the couch, she straddles my lap.
âThis works too,â I say, running my hands up under her dress and settling them on her ass. She shifts, spreading her legs wider. Even through my jeans, my dick responds to her heat.
She loops her arms loosely around my neck. âIâm serious here.â
I glance down where our bodies are touching. âGrinding your pussy against my dick kind of negates a serious conversation.â
Judging by the impatient look on her face sheâs not amused.
âWhatâs on your mind?â
âI visited my doctor last week.â
âAre you okay?â
A slight smile tips the corners of her mouth up. âYes. It was the lady bits doc.â
âOh. Why?â
âI wanted to go back on the pill. And have some testsâ¦â All the brave sort of drains out of her and her cheeks turn pink.
It finally seeps into my thick brain where sheâs going with this and my dickâwho had already been excited about Charlotte in my lap, is ready to punch through my jeans.
My fingers trace over her collarbone and down the front of her dress. âWhat are you trying to tell me?â
âCould you goâ¦â
As her voice trails off, my mouth twists into a wry smile. âDonât need to.â
âWhyâs that?â
âBecause I had a bunch of tests when I was in the hospital.â
Her head tiltâs cute as fuck.
âUh, that was quite a few months ago, wasnât it?â
âYeah.â
Iâm probably being a dick, but I find her discomfort amusing. Instead of straight up asking how many women Iâve fucked, she blushes and stutters. Itâs damn cute coming from a woman who makes her living using words as a weapon.
âYou really havenât been withâ?â
