He swallowed, a little knot of irrational jealousy twisting in his gut.

“He didn’t know where his towel was?” he asked instead, making an obscure reference to a joke from the book.

Her soft, somehow-wounded smile tugged at his heart. “He didn’t,” she whispered, her eyes holding his.

“I do though,” he murmured.

“You do,” she whispered.

He leant forward and kissed her. Her lips and mouth tasted of peppermint and chocolate. She hmmmed into the kiss, swiping her tongue against his before pulling back. “Favorite animal?”

“Stingray. Naturally.”

She burst out laughing. Fuck a duck, he liked the sound of her laugh.

Smiling, he took the ice cream tub from her hands, stabbed the spoon into its center, and deposited the tub on the counter beside her. Cupping her jaw in his hands, her brushed his thumb along her bottom lip. “Can I make love to you again?”

“I thought you’d never fucking ask,” she murmured and captured his lips with hers in a fierce, brief kiss.
