He got to his feet, tugging the gloves from his hands and tossing them to the ground. “This little guy is in pretty good condition. I don’t see there being any issues from this point forward. Amazing, isn’t it?”

She nodded. “Is it a boy or a girl?”

“Girl.”

The small creature blinked, lifting her head. The cow continued licking her calf, nudging it. The calf rose up on her front legs, but they quickly buckled.

Jessica tilted her head. “I thought you said it would take two hours.”

He shrugged. “Depends on the mother. Sometimes the cow will encourage it earlier.”

“Wow.”

Ian gathered the items he’d displaced from the crate and cleaned up. Meanwhile, momma and baby were making quick progress on the calf’s first steps.
