; âWell then, where shall we go to celebrate your birthday dinner? You name the place, and Iâll make it happen.â
She blinked up at him, shy suddenly. âI was thinking your bed. Does that suit?â
Without another word, he scooped down and lifted her, holding her to his chest. She was the most perfect creature in the world, and he was not going to waste his second chance.
EPILOGUE
Three years later.
âAnd so you finally married me,â Hendrix grinned with a dramatic sigh, taking up a spot on the bench beside her. The warm summer breeze rustled passed, lifting Chloeâs hair.
âAnd so we finally got married,â she agreed, her smile taking over her features. The sun seemed to burst from her soul. Her happiness was a force of its own.
âIt only took me three years to get you down the aisle.â
âThree wonderful years,â she retorted, snuggling her head onto his shoulder.
âI wonât disagree with you there.â He put an arm around her shoulders, holding her tight. âWhen I met you, Ellie was little more than a baby. And now sheâs in school.â
âMmmm,â Chloe pulled a face. âSheâs five going on fifteen. Did you notice she refused to wear the flower girl dress we picked out?â
He laughed softly. âI thought the Bob the Builder overalls were perfect, actually.â
âThey just didnât quite match the Tinkerbell wings,â she said with an exaggerated sigh.
âYou have raised a beautiful little wildling. A perfect individual. And she looked almost as radiantly beautiful as you today.â
Chloe smiled up at him. âFlattery will get you everywhere, Mr Forrester. And you have had more than a small bit to do with how sheâs growing up.â She stroked his cheek lovingly. âI canât remember a time in my life when you werenât here.â
âMe neither. I missed the first two birthdays of Ellieâs life, but Iâm not going to miss another.â
âHow did I get so lucky?â Chloe teased, her head on Hendrixâs shoulder.
âBy being the most deserving, and wonderful woman in the world. You remember that poster you told me about?â
A far ago memory came to Chloe, but it wasnât quite clear. She grasped at it, and then shook her head.
âYou needed a hero, and so you became one yourself.â He kissed her forehead. âYou are a hero. To yourself, and to me. You rescued me, Chloe. When all I had was grief and anger, you brought me back to life.â
âAnd you saved me. I hate to think where Iâd be if I hadnât met you.â
âRuling the world,â he responded seriously. âYou never needed saving. You are the bravest woman Iâve ever met. Iâm just lucky you decided to let me share your life.â
âOkay. Have it your way. Youâre lucky to have me.â
âGlad you agree with me.â
He eased back against the side of the yacht. âNow sit back and look out there.â
Chloe peered across the ocean. It was glistening in the afternoon sun; the water was making a splashing sound across the bow of the luxury boat. âI donât see anything,â she murmured distractedly. âWhat is it? Dolphins?â
âNo,â he squeezed her shoulder. âItâs our future.â
She laughed. âWeâre literally riding off into the sunset together?â
âYou better believe it. Nothing but the best for you.â
