Radcliff shrugged. âI canât ask her to put in the kind of time this requires for nothing.â
; Phoebe looked at Margot, âAre you worth it?â
âShe isâ¦â
âI was asking her.â
âYeah, Iâm worth it.â
âDo you believe I didnât kill my husband?â
âI havenât done enough work to draw a conclusion. So, I donât believe you did either.â
âYou have an open mind?â
âItâs the best way to get to the truth. So, yeah.â
Phoebe seemed to like that.
âTell me your side of the story,â Margot said as she took the digital recorder out of her purse and set it down in front of Phoebe.
âI donât really like to be recorded.â
Margot shrugged and waited. She wasnât all that concerned about what Phoebe liked or didnât like.
âWhere should I start?â
âWherever you want.â
âCanât you talk to the lawyers? I already gave them the whole sad story.â
âIâd prefer to hear it from you.â
âWhy?â
âItâs your story, not theirs.â
When Phoebe stayed silent, Margot added, âYou have an appointment or something?â
Phoebe smiled again as she took a cigarette out of the pack in front of her. She lit it up with a disposable lighter and blew a smoke ring before she said, âI came home, changed clothes, and noticed the hot tub was running. I went out and found Tim and Rita floating in hot red water. I screamed for a while and then called the police. Thereâs not much more to tell.â
âThereâs always more to tell.â
After a long pause Phoebe asked Margot, âDid Rick tell you I left him for Tim?â
âUntil today I never knew you existed.â
âYou thought you were the first?â
âNo, I just didnât care.â
âIt wasnât Rickâs fault that Tim drove a Ferrari. Though it was his fault he chose a profession that ensured he never would.â
âItâs not always about money.â
âNo, but most of the time it is. I bet youâd be leaving poor Rick behind if the guy driving the Ferrari was looking your way.â
