âBill, itâs tougher than you think. A friend of Evanâs turned up dead, so weâve got the local cops on our side now; they want to talk to him as much as we do.â
âI donât care if they talk to him or not,â Eggers said. âI just want those papers backâsigned, sealed and delivered.â
âThatâs what I want, too, Bill, but Iâll understand if youâd rather send somebody else down here to find the kid.â
âDonât hand me that crap. You know I donât have time to start over with somebody else.â
âThen leave it with me, and let me get the job done, okay?â
Eggers made a harrumphing noise and hung up.
âHeâs not happy?â Dino asked.
âWhat do you think?â
âI think heâs not happy.â
âGood guess. I canât say that Iâm happy, either.â
âExcept for the Swedish doctor.â
âExcept for the Swedish doctor; Iâm happy about her. You want me to see if she has a friend?â
Dino thought about that. âNah, Genevieve would find out and nail me with it.â
âHow would she find out? I wouldnât tell.â
âSheâd find out, believe me. Sometimes I think she has some sort of ESP girl-to-girl network that constantly broadcasts my whereabouts and my company.â
âThatâs a scary thought,â Stone said.

âCan I get you a drink?â she asked.
âDo you have any bourbon?â
; âI donât know,â she said, pointing at the bar. âLook through those bottles.â
To Stoneâs surprise, he found a bottle of Knob Creek, unopened.
âMy favorite,â he called to her, holding up the bottle. âHowâd you know?â
âI didnât,â she called from the kitchen. âMost of those bottles were brought by other people as gifts.â
Stone was opening the bottle when his cell phone vibrated. âYes?â
âItâs Tommy. Evan Keating has a reservation at Louieâs Backyard.â
âWhen?â
âFive minutes ago. Iâm going over there myself.â
