The tone of voice was Fatherâs âwhat did you think?â and, just as if he were still a child, it made Noxon feel hopelessly stupid.
âItâs not as if you can do any of this,â said Noxon. And, for having responded like a child, he now felt that he deserved to feel stupid.
âYou can do what you can do,â said Father, âand I can do what I can do.â
âI donât know what Iâm doing,â said Noxon.
âNo one ever does,â said Father. âBut at least we expendables always know what we did. You humans canât even hold on to your memories, just the echo of a shadow of a dream.â
Noxon didnât bother arguing. âYou are superior in every way,â he said placidly. âIâm content with my second-rate yet biologically active state.â
âAnd every bug is content to be a bug.â
âProud to be a bug, and donât you forget it.â
âI wonât,â said Father.
Noxon laughed. âIâm having so much fun, it makes me want to kill and skin a beast of some kind. Just for old timesâ sake.â
âOld times,â said Father. âI donât suppose you want to take me back to the beginning with you.â
âThen thereâd be two of you in Ramfold, and no way to hide you from your old self.â
âI just want to know what happens,â said Father. âYou can understand my curiosity.â
âNo, I canât,â said Noxon. âThatâs such a human emotion.â
âItâs in my programming. I have to know.â
; âAnd yet you wonât.â
âBut the mice will,â said Father.
âIf I decide to bring them,â said Noxon.
âAnd if you donât?â
âWe canât have them infesting Ramfold,â said Noxon. âThey know that. So if I go, and I leave them behind, itâs your job to make sure they never get off this ship.â
âMy job to kill them.â
âYouâve done it before,â said Noxon. âAfter all, youâre expendable yourself.â
âBut youâre going to take them,â said Father.
âI havenât decided.â
âBut you are.â
âIâve killed and skinned a thousand animals. More. Do you think the deaths of these mice will bother me?â
âYes,â said Father.
âWell, youâre right. And Iâm taking them. If I die, they die. If I live, theyâll share my fate.â
âTheyâre not saying anything about your magnanimous decision,â said Father.
