âIt was like every day you knew something brilliant was being created,â she said. âI felt like it was an honor to work on such a project.â
âSanders said the Harlows were about out of money when they got home,â I said. âPersonal assets were going to have to be sold.â
That seemed to puzzle Maines. âIs that true? If it is, thatâs the first Iâve heard of it.â
âSanders said he told the Harlows about the situation shortly after they arrived back in the United States.â
âWell, there you go,â Maines said. âI left as soon as I got off the plane. My boyfriend was there at the jetport waiting, and I was in no mood to stick around.â
âSo you didnât accompany them to the ranch?â
âI did not,â she said. âI was done once I got off the plane, and everyone knew it. Things had been intense for so long, I needed to breathe. I still do.â
âDid Thom talk about a mysterious new investor in the film?â I asked.
She half laughed. â âThere are always mysterious new investors on the horizon.â Thatâs one of Thomâs lines.â
âWhat about their sex life?â Mo-bot asked.
The assistant reddened. âI ⦠Iâm their personal assistant, but Iâm not privy to their life behind closed doors.â
I said, âThere were lots of sex toys in their closets.â
Maines reddened again, looked at her lap. âLook, thatâs way outside my pay grade. All I know is that Thom and Jennifer were devoted to each other and to their children, and that they led an exemplary life. And Iâve had just about enough of this. Iâm going to the FBI, get them involved.â
âI think itâs a good idea, but I donât know what standing youâll have,â I said as she got to her feet. âLegally, I mean. Youâre not family.â
She hesitated, glanced at the door. âSo what should I do?â
âLet me make the call first,â I said. âIâll tell the FBI what we know, try to work with them from here on out. You can call afterwards, back me up with your concerns.â
Maines nodded, put a card on my desk, took mine. Then she thumped a finger on the edge of the desk, said, âRemember that movie All the Presidentâs Men, about Watergate? That guy kept saying âFollow the money.â Itâs always about the money, isnât it?â
âPoint taken,â I said. âDefinitely point taken.â
; Chapter 27
TWENTY MINUTES LATER I was looking at copies of Cynthia Mainesâs financials courtesy of Sci.
âMaines receives a base salary of four hundred K a year,â Kloppenberg said. âBut she is underwater on six different investments she made before the crash, three of them in Vegas real estate. Her cash flow is strong, but sheâs got no savings to speak of. Iâd describe her lifestyle as self-indulgent and her investment philosophy as incoherent. Other than a total lack of use of credit or debit cards over the last four days, Maines has a long and wide history of extravagant purchases. Luxury goods. Robb Report baubles.â
âNo bangles?â I asked.
âPlenty of those too,â Sci said. âTiffanyâs most recently.â
âWhat else?â I asked.
âI think she was lying about the Harlowsâ sex life,â Mo-bot said.
âEither that or sheâs a prude,â I said.
âBut what are the chances of that in Hollywood?â Mo-bot asked. âAnd there was another thing she was being evasive about.â
âWhatâs that?â I asked.
âGuadalajara,â Mo-bot said. âI got the impression that she was conflicted, less than forthright.â
