Damon didnât take a seat, didnât offer one to his father. âWhy are you here?â
âI wanted to congratulate you in person.â
The bare nerve of the man was galling.
âYouâre very quick off the mark. I havenât been married twenty-four hours yet.â
His fatherâs smile stayed crocodile wide. âI never thought you had it in you.â
âHad what in me?â
âTo marry so...happily.â
âHappily?â Damon queried. âYou mean like you and Mother?â
âYour mother and I have a very successful arrangement.â
Yeah. An arrangement that was bloodless and only about making the most of their assets. âAnd thatâs what you think this is?â
âAre you saying youâre in love with her?â His father laughed. âIâm sure you love the power and opportunity that come with her beautiful body.â
Revulsion triggered rage but Damon breathed deeply, settling his pulse. He wasnât going to bite. His father wasnât worth it. But he couldnât help declaring the obvious. âIâm not like you.â
His father frowned. âMeaning?â
âYou have at least one other child that you have done nothing for. You abuse people, then abandon them.â
His fatherâs expression narrowed.
âHow many others are there?â Damon asked bluntly.
âThat was one mistake.â
Mistake?
âI saw you with her,â Damon said softly, knowing heâd regret the revelation but unable to resist asking.
âWho?â
âKassieâs mother.â Damon had followed him once, here in Palisadesâthe opulent island of personal betrayal had taken Damon on a swift bleak journey to adulthood and understanding. Heâd seen his father kiss that woman with such passion. Damon had actually thought his father was truly in love. That he was truly capable of it and it was just that he didnât feel it for either Damon or his mother. âWhy didnât you leave us and stay with her?â Heâd never understood it.
An appalled expression carved deeper lines in his fatherâs face. âI would never leave your mother.â
âNot because you love her,â Damon said. âBut because her connections were too important to your career. It was your arrangement.â
Because he was that calculating. That ruthlessly ambitious. That incapable of real love.
âYour mother and I make a good team. We understand each other.â
By turning blind eyes to infidelities and focusing on their careers. Theyâd used his funds and her family name. Connections and money made for progress in political circles. Theyâd had Damon only to cement the image of the âperfect career coupleâ. Not because heâd actually been wanted, as his mother had told him every time heâd disappointed her. And that had been often.
âSo you abandoned your lover and your daughter and refused to help when they were struggling because of the risk to your stupid career and supposedly perfect marriage.â Damon was disgusted.
âI offered her money but she was too proud to accept it. That was her choice.â
âYou knew she suffered and you didnât go back.â
âWhat more could I have done, Damon?â his father asked. âWas it my fault she chose to remain in that squalid little cottage?â
Damon understood it nowâheâd realised the horrific truth when heâd learned how that woman had suffered for so long, so alone. His father had never loved Kassieâs mother. Heâd wanted her, used her and walked away when heâd had enough. When sheâd refused his money his conscience was cleared and heâd considered himself absolved.
No guilt. No shame. No heart.
âItâll look strange if you donât invite us both here soon,â his father said, his callousness towards Kassie and her mother apparently forgotten already. âYour mother would like to stay as a guest.â
âIâm never inviting either of you here,â Damon said shortly. âHow can you act as if weâre close when we havenât seen each other in years?â Bitterness burned up his throat. He wanted the taint of the man nowhere near Eleni.
âWeâve all been busy.â
His father hadnât realised heâd been avoiding him? âNo. We have no relationship. Youâre not using this. Youâre not using me.â
âYou canât get away from your blood, Damon.â John Gale laughed. âYouâre my son. Just because weâre more alike than you want to admit, doesnât mean it isnât so. You canât get away from who you are.â
Heâd never wanted to be like either of his parents. They were why heâd never wanted a serious relationship, let alone to marry. Why heâd wanted to build his companyâhis successâon his own terms. In isolation and not dependent on manipulated relationships.
âI might not be able to deny my blood, but I can deny you access to my wife and to our home,â Damon said coldly. âYouâre not welcome here. Youâll never be welcome here. I suggest you leave right now, before I have the soldiers throw you out.â
âYour wifeâs soldiers.â
âYes.â Damon refused to let his father get a rise out of him. âDonât come back. Donât contact me again. And donât dare try to contact Eleni directly.â
âOr?â
âOr Iâll let the world know just what you are.â Heâd strike where his father cared the mostâhis reputation, his image.
Johnâs eyes narrowed.
âIt will be much better for you to return to New York and whatever project it is youâre about to launch,â Damon said lazily. âAnd no more gleeful interviews mentioning Eleni and me. Youâre showing your lack of class.â
That blow landed and Damon watched as his fatherâs complexion turned ruddy. After that, John didnât stick around and Damon slowly wound his way back up to Eleniâs apartment. Heâd done the right thing getting him out of the palace as quickly as possible. But his fatherâs slimy insincerity stuck.
He didnât want it getting to Eleni. As soon as the baby was born heâd begin the separation process because sheâd be so much better off without him. But heâd still be the Princessâs ex-husband, the father of her child. Another prince or princess.
Too late he realised her life was now intrinsically tied to his. His gut tightened as he mulled the possible configurations of their futures and the fact that she would always be part of his world. In the cold light of day he realised heâd not âwonâ anything at all.
Nor had she.
But heâd meant what heâd told her. Relationships never lasted. Not for anyone. And certainly not him. Never him. He refused.
He paused for a moment outside her apartment door to draw in a breath. Then he let himself in. It was too much to hope she was still in bed. She was dressed in a simple tee shirt and skirt and his wayward body tightened at the sight of her lithe legs.
âWhere have you been?â she asked, sending him a sleepy smile, but her sea-green eyes were too searching for him to cope with.
âI have a company to run,â Damon said sharply, picking up his tablet and staring at it. Hard. âIâve neglected it long enough while tracking you down.â
Silence filled the room, tightening the invisible string connecting his eyes to her body and in the end he could no longer resist the tug.
A limpid look was trained on him. âPerhaps you should have slept a little longer.â
He couldnât help but smile at that most princess-polite sass.
She wandered over to the window, affording him an even better view of her legs and the curve of her body. She had no idea of her sensuality.
âSo what have you been working on thatâs caused your mood to...deteriorate?â
âItâs not important.â
âIt wouldnât have anything to do with your father, would it?â
He froze. âYour palace spies have reported in already?â
âNo spies. I saw a replay of the interview with him at the airport.â She turned to face him. âIs he here?â
âHeâs already left.â
; âYou didnât want me to meet him?â
âNo.â He didnât want to explain why. But he saw the wounded flash in her eyes. âHeâs not a nice man.â
Her lips twisted. âYou donât need to protect me.â
âYes, I do.â He huffed out a breath and glared at his tablet again, gripping it as if it were his life-support system.
His marriage to Eleni could be nothing like his parentsâ one. For one thing, it wasnât about to last. It wasnât about his career and never would be. It was about protecting his child. It was about protecting Eleni.
âAre you sure itâs me youâre protecting?â she asked quietly.
He glanced across at her. âMeaning?â
âYour father...and you.â She looked uncomfortable. âYouâre not close...â
âNo.â Damon couldnât help but smile faintly. Definitely not close. âI havenât had contact with him in almost five years.â
