âNice to meet you, Charlotte.â Serena lets out a bit of nervous laughter. âI guess itâs not a good time to ask if I can come hang out upstate?â
I lean over and kiss Charlotteâs cheek. âIâll be at the bar.â
After Teller leaves, Serena flicks her gaze around the room. I guess I donât blame her for being nervous. I practically ran over here and peed on Marcelâs leg to mark him as my territory.
âHow did you know who I was?â she asks with an almost hopeful eyebrow raised.
âTawny.â
âLet me guess. She told you to come over and get your man before I blew him.â
Now Iâm the one with the nervous laughter. Yes, Tawny ended up being the kind of olâ lady I expected. âSort of.â
âThatâs exactly why I was thinking about moving back upstate.â She flashes a quick smile. âHopeâs always been nice to me. And I guess word has spread through some of the LOKI chapters, that upstate has the nicest presidentâs old lady.â
Something about that strikes me as both sweet and sad. âHopeâs good to everybody from what Iâve seen.â I hurry to add, âBut Iâm pretty sure sheâll kill anyone eyeing her man.â
Serena laughs. âProbably. Canât blame her.â She hesitates, then tilts her head. âTeller said his sister and Murphy are together?â
At once it clicks who this chick is, Murphyâs sort-of ex. Thatâs a relief. When I first saw her talking to Teller, I assumed she was a bunny he used to shack up with when he visited this clubhouse.
âTheyâre engaged, yes.â Iâm not sure how much I should say, but surely thatâs common knowledge.
âWow. Never thought. Wow.â Her gaze strays across the room to Teller. âHe probably forced that, huh?â Another nervous giggle rolls out of her.
âUh, not really. I donât think Murphy was going to let anything stand in his way.â
Her pretty smile falters and I have a small twinge of regret for my words. But I also feel protective of Heidi and donât like this stranger making assumptions about their relationship.
Before the conversation turns any more awkward, a rough looking, dark-haired Lost King walks up, grabbing Serena around her tiny waist. âWhereâve you been, sweetheart?â he asks, slurring each word.
Serenaâs mouth turns down. Maybe heâs not her favorite of the Lost Kings, I donât know.
âHi, Shadow,â she says. âHave you met Tellerâs old lady Charlotte?â
Busy licking Serenaâs neck, he barely throws me a greeting. Serena wiggles her fingers at me as he drags her way. âIâll catch you later, Charlotte.â
Iâm not alone for long. An older Lost King swaggers over, but before he opens his mouth, Tellerâs at my side. âSheâs with me.â
âNo disrespect, was just coming to say hello. How you been, T?â
My gaze and mind wander while they talk, leaving me in the perfect position to notice the biker at the door pulling out a gun.
âMarcel!â I canât miss the anxiety in Charlotteâs voice.
Before I determine what caused it, a blast silences everyone in the room. âGet behind me,â I say to Charlotte. She doesnât argue or hesitate. In seconds, her soft warm body molds to my back.
At the front door, an older brother who I recognize waves a pistol around. My only concerns at the moment are keeping Charlotte safe and locating my president.
I donât have to say anything to her. She follows my lead and slowly backs up toward the bar with me. I slip into a spot next to Rock, leaving Charlotte protected between my body and the thick wooden bar.
âJesus Christ,â Sway says. âItâs Smoke. Told you he hasnât been right since the accident.â
âHe need to blow off steam or is he an actual threat?â Rock asks. I donât see any sign of Wrath or Hope and Trinity, so I assume theyâre safe somewhere else in the clubhouse. Rock hasnât lost his shit, so he must be certain Hopeâs okay.
I drew my pistol at the first shot and have it at my side, pointed at the floor, waiting to see how Rock wants to handle this. We may be standing in Swayâs clubhouse, but Iâll still take my directions from my president.
Z quietly slips in the front door while Smokeâs busy ranting a bunch of nonsense. Whileâs Smokeâs distracted, Z wraps one thick arm around the old guyâs neck, keeping him in a chokehold until two of Swayâs crew disarm the wild biker.
âTake him downstairs!â Sway shouts.
Sway slaps my arm. âAlways something exciting down here, right? I need to take care of this, you two hang out.â
âShowâs over, people. Party on!â Sway shouts as he moves through the room.
Rock meets my stare. âYou all right?â
âIâm fine.â Reaching behind me, I pull Charlotte forward.
âWell, that was exciting,â she says.
âWrath has the girls in one of our rooms,â Rock explains. âI need to go find them.â
âYeah, go ahead.â I nod at Charlotte. âI think weâre done for the night.â
While she put on a brave face for Rock, Charlotteâs trembling body says sheâs not okay. âLetâs go to our room, Sunshine.â
âBoy, Trinity wasnât kidding about your club being unique,â she mumbles.
âSorry about that,â Tawny says, joining us.
Inwardly I groan. Iâm ready for this night to be over and not in the mood to force polite conversation with the Queen B of our downstate charter. She rakes her nails through my hair, which is creepy as fuck with Charlotte holding my hand and Tawny old enough to be my mother.
Instead of being annoyed by the older womanâs fake-as-fuck display of affection, Charlotte looks like sheâs trying not to laugh.
âItâs certainly lively down here,â she says to Tawny.
âWe do our best.â She finally stops touching me, but she opens her mouth which is almost worse. âYouâve grown into such a handsome young man, Teller.â
For the love of fuck. Why?
âIâve known him since he was a teenager,â Tawny says to Charlotte.
âIâm sure he was a handful.â Charlotte nods.
âWell,â Tawny taps her finger over my lips and I barely fight the urge to shake her off. âThis mouth of his almost got him in trouble more times than I can count.â
âOh, it still does on occasion,â Charlotte says.
I narrow my eyes and raise an eyebrow at her.
Tawny laughs and pats my shoulder. âI like her,â she whispers in my ear. As if she thinks Iâd been waiting for her approval.
âMe too.â
Satisfied that sheâs done her olâ lady duties, Tawny saunters into the rest of the crowd. When I glance down at Charlotte, sheâs shaking.
With laughter. Not fear.
âAre you laughing at me?â I ask in a low voice.
âA little.â Her gaze strays to Tawny. âSheâs so predatory.â
Thatâs a good word to describe Tawny.
âDid you two everâ¦?â her voice trails off without finishing the question, but I donât need her to complete the thought. Let alone say it out loud.
âFuck no.â Internally, I shudder at the idea. Slipping my arm around her shoulders, I steer her toward the hallway. âI think thatâs enough fun for the night.â
CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
âCome on! Weâre going to be late,â I yell to Carter.
I havenât spent a whole lot of time at my apartment in the few weeks since we returned from our trip downstate. But I wanted to make sure Carter came with me today, so I spent the night here.
âAre you sure you want me at this party?â he asks for the millionth time. âI feel weird.â
âItâs a family party. They invited non-MC people too.â
âWell, I didnât receive an invitation.â
âCarter, I stood right there and heard Heidi personally invite you. Next excuse?â
âShe was just being polite. Iâve never even met her kid.â
âWell, today youâll be able to finally m
eet her,â I say with exaggerated patience. I feel like weâve been having this conversation all morning long.
Oh, wait, we have.
Since Chuckâs attack, Carterâs been down on MCs in general and my boyfriend in particular. He doesnât seem to care that the attack was about my uncle and not about the Lost Kings.
He blames Marcel.
Giving Carter a complete picture means Iâll have to disclose what happened to me too, and Marcel knows how much I donât want to burden my brother with that, so he hasnât bothered to correct him. Honestly, I donât think it would help at this point.
âYouâre sure you want me there?â
âYes! Oh my God, stop dragging your feet. Weâre going to be late.â
When I emerge from my bedroom, heâs waiting by the front door with a big box covered in white paper with rainbow unicorns scattered all over it, topped off with a big pink bow.
âWhatâs that?â
âItâs a birthday party. Arenât we supposed to bring presents?â
âWell, yes. But I already bought something from both of us.â
âAnd Iâm bringing this from me.â
âWhat is it?â
âItâs this unicorn. She plays different songs and melodies. I donât know. It lights up and does some other stuff.â He shrugs. âTeller said his sisterâs into cognitive development toys and this is supposed to be good for that.â
Iâm not sure what to say. Instead of responding in some meaningful way, I stand there with my mouth open.
âWhatâs with the face?â He opens the door. âCome on, now youâre the one making us late.â
Even though I plan to stay over, we take my car. It makes sense. Carterâs been using it more than I have lately.
A prospect lets us in the front gate after I wave to him.
Carter whistles as we climb the driveway. âWell, I feel better now. I think youâre pretty safe out here.â
âHave you been worried about me?â
âYes, I worry about you, Charlotte.â
I reach over and pat his leg. âI worry about you too.â
Teller meets us in the driveway and points out where we should park. He opens my door and pulls me into a hug. âHey, Sunshine. Missed you.â
âMissed you too.â
âJesus. You saw each other yesterday,â Carter grumbles.
âWhatâs up, Carter? I see youâre full of cheer this afternoon.â
Carter flashes a fake smile and pulls the present he brought out of the back seat.
Teller raises an eyebrow. âI thought youââ
âThatâs from Carter.â
âThis is quite a place, Teller. Seems too classy for a bunch of bikers.â
âWe like it out here.â
Teller introduces Carter around. Thankfully my brother seems too uncomfortable to say anything too obnoxious.
âHappy birthday to you.â The club, the whole club, and everyone else in attendance, finishes belting out the last verse of Happy Birthday to baby Alexa.
Marcel leans in to help her blow out her birthday candles, and I slip my phone out to capture a picture. This is a side of him few people probably know, and Iâm happy Carterâs here to witness it. Maybe it will put his mind at ease.
Once the candleâs out, Alexa promptly plants her face in the cake.
Trinity has her professional camera out to capture every bit of pink frosting that gets in Alexaâs hair.
âOh my God. Look at you.â Heidi giggles as she attempts to clean her daughterâs face. âDid that taste good?â
Alexa chortles and plunges her little fists into the cake next.
Trinity leans over and whispers in my ear. âGood thing I made two cakes. The other oneâs tucked away in the kitchen.â
âThank God, Iâve been drooling over it since we got here.â
Marcelâs absolutely enamored with his niece. Every time I see them together, thoughts I never, ever expected Iâd have, start running through my head.
Murphy cuts the side of the cake that escaped Alexaâs grabby hands and Hope passes it out. While Marcelâs busy feeding Alexa cake, Murphy comes over and gives me a one-armed hug. âCan you check on Heidi? She went inside.â
âSure. Is everything okay?â
Although he nods, he seems unsure, so I leave to check on her.
I find Heidi in the kitchen standing at the sink with the water running. After a few seconds, I realize the water masks the sounds of her crying. âHeidi, whatâs wrong?â
âOh!â She leans over the sink and splashes water on her face before facing me. âNothing.â
I take measured steps and gently touch her shoulder. âThe partyâs lovely. Alexa seems so happy. Whatâs wrong?â
âWho am I talking to? Charlotte my friend? Or Charlotte my brotherâs girlfriend?â
âWhoever you need.â
She takes a deep breath. âItâs nothing. I just feel bad Axelâs not here for Alexa, you know? Even if we werenât togetherâ¦I donât knowâ¦Iâm notâ¦Murphyâs so good to her. To me. I canât help feeling bad, though.â
Her admission stuns me a little. Iâm used to seeing the worst sides of broken families. Women who wish their exes were dead. Men whoâd rather spend their day with the new girlfriend than at a one-year-oldâs birthday party.
Even though she wonât turn twenty for a few more weeks, she has more depth and compassion than so many people Iâve encountered in my life.
I choose my words carefully. âThatâs understandable. Thatâs what makes you a good mom, Heidi.â
âYeah, but it makes me a shitty fiancée.â
Remembering the concerned way Murphy asked me to check on Heidi, I say, âI think Murphy understands.â
She hiccups. âHe does. We talked about it this morning. Thatâs why I donât want him to know it was still bothering me. I was fine until she blew out her candle.â Her mouth pulls into a half-smirk. âOr rather, my brother blew out the candle and she face-planted in the cake.â
âTrinity got a great photo of that.â
Heidi chuckles. âI saw.â
âHave you tried reaching out to Axelâs parents?â
âGod, no.â
âMaybe it will help you feel better if Alexa connects with Axelâs family.â
She shakes her head. âTheyâve never wanted anything to do with her.â
âWell, maybe now that some time has gone byâ¦â
âI donât think I can standââ
âTo have them reject you?â
She snorts and waves her hand in the air. âPlease. Iâve been rejected my whole life, Charlotte. I couldnât care less if they like me, but I wonât have my daughter treated like sheâs not good enough for them. Absolutely not.â
The little girl in me whose mother never showed up for a single parent-conference night, school play, or graduation weeps with her. The attorney whoâs seen a lot of parents lacking the strength to stand up for their children, cheers for her.
âWell, sheâs one lucky little girl. She has an entire club full of overprotective men happily attending a unicorn-themed birthday party.â
That finally puts a smile on her face. âWeâre so lucky. I love our family.â
The door that leads into the dining room swings open, halting our talk. âEverything all right?â Hope calls out.
Heidi sniffs once then forces a bright smile. âIâm okay, Aunt Hope.â
Now it makes sense why Heidiâs so tight with Hope and practically worships her.
âOh, Heidi.â Hope sweeps her up in a hug and flashes a quick smile. âTellerâs looking for you,â she says to me.
âIâll find him in a minute.â
Heidi snorts and turns sideways, still keeping her arms around Hope. âThatâs right. Make my brother wait for it.â
âWellâ¦â
âActually,â Heidi says, her lips curving into a wicked grin. âI wouldnât mind a niece or nephew. Then Murphy can stop worrying about Alexa not havi
ng any siblings.â
âOh my God.â I burst out laughing. âYeah, weâre definitely not there yet.â I sneak a sideways glance at Hope. âBesides, I think itâs the duty of the First Lady to start making some baby Lost Kings.â
Hope snort-giggles but surprisingly doesnât disagree.
Instead, she pulls me into her other side, hugging me tightly, making me feel like I finally have a place.
With this family.
âNo good can come from that, bro,â Murphy says, backing away from the kitchen door. He shakes his head, but thereâs a grin forming at the corners of his mouth.
I step up and take a peek at whatever it is he thinks is so funny.
âFuck me,â I mutter.
Hope has one arm wrapped around Heidi and one around Charlotte. The three of them look like theyâre plotting world domination.
Murphy jerks his thumb over his shoulder. âYour brother-in-law-to-be is out there unchaperoned.â
âHeâll be okay.â
âHow have you not kicked his ass yet?â
I lift one shoulder. âThe same way I stop myself from kicking your ass every day, I guess.â
âHar, har.â
âWhat are you two creeps doing?â Wrathâs big voice echoes through the room.
âShh.â Murphy tilts his head toward the door.
Wrath, using one massive arm to brush Murphy out of his way, takes a look and comes away laughing. âYou two are fucked for sure.â
Murphy glances in the window again and loses the smile. âHeidi had a rough morning. Iâm glad sheâs talking to Hope.â
âAbout what?â I ask.
Murphy shrugs off my question. Whether itâs because he doesnât want to talk about it in front of Wrath or itâs his way of reminding me to butt out, Iâm not sure. Either way, I leave it alone. If they want me to know, one of them will tell me.
âAt least the only advice Hope gives my wife is what kind of sexwear to buy for me,â Wrath says.
âWhat?â
âGross.â Murphy shakes his head. âI donât want to hear Hope and sexwear in the same sentence ever again. Iâm already subjected to enough living with them.â
