âGood,â Rock says.
Z shrugs and continues. âShe wanted to know how hard we were on Trinity and Hope.â
Wrath leans forward at the mention of his wifeâs name. âWhat about it?â
âEase up. She was asking what else she could do to prove herself to us.â
If itâs possible, I love Charlotte even more. For her understanding of my world and her acceptance.
âYou trust her?â Rock asks Z.
âI do, yeah.â
âGlad to hear it,â I say. âBecause sheâs staying here with me for a few days.â
Rock nods. âGood. Safest place for her right now.â He glances at Wrath. âReach out to Whisper and ask for a sit-down. We need to see where we stand with them before this goes any further.â
âYeah, okay.â
On my way out, Wrath stops me. âIâm glad sheâs okay. Never expected something like this from Merlin.â
âMe either.â
Charlotteâs swaying on her feet when I pick her up from Rockâs house. Outside, she blinks at me and I rub her cheek with the back of my hand. âHungry?â
âHope fed me.â She yawns. âIâm exhausted.â
We donât say much as I lead her back to the clubhouse and up to my room. Itâs still daylight out, but I take her into the bathroom and strip her down. Try to keep myself calm when I find multiple bruises and marks on her body that her clothes kept hidden.
âHowâd this happen,â I ask, gently tracing the deep purple mark running from her hip to the top of her ass.
She turns and glances down. âJesus, no wonder my whole back hurts.â I stand and grab a bottle of Advil out of the cabinet, shaking a few tablets into her hand and giving her a glass of water.
When sheâs finished, I ask again. âHowâd it happen?â
âHe shoved me into the counter.â Her bottom lip trembles. âI was trapped between him and the counter. I thoughtâ¦I thoughtâ¦â She drops her head, hair falling around her face. âI donât know. I was terrified. Thatâs why I stabbed him.â
Taking care to keep her injured hand dry, I lead her into the shower and clean her up.
âIs it okay that Iâm here?â she asks.
âWhat kind of question is that?â
She shakes her head.
âThis is where youâre supposed to be. Right here with me. Youâre safe here.â
Finally, she meets my eyes. âI know.â
Like a zombie, she follows me out of the shower, lets me dry her off and slip one of my T-shirts over her head.
âYou look good in that.â
The corners of her mouth turn up just a bit.
âBedtime. You can barely keep your eyes open.â
Under the covers, she canât get comfortable. I pull her into my arms and eventually, she settles down.
âIâm so sorry, Charlotte.â Itâs easier to say this in the dark. âYour brother was right. I shouldâve protected you better. I saw how pissed Merlin was the other day. Claiming you only made him angrierââ
âCaveman,â she teases.
âStop. Iâm serious.â
She presses her hand against my chest and lifts her head. Her eyes glitter in the darkness. âNo, Iâm serious. I understand you better than you think, Marcel. You want to take this and twist it so that itâs somehow your fault. And Iâm not going to let you do that. The only one responsible for today is my uncle.â
I hesitate, and she keeps going.
âDonât fight me on this, Marcel. I argue for a living. Youâre just going to lose.â
How can I not laugh?
âI love you so much. I canât stand anything happening to you, Charlotte.â My voice lowers even more. âI felt fucking helpless today and didnât like it.â
âI know youâre not used to it, but sometimes things happen we canât control.â
âItâs how we react to them that matters.â
She laughs softly and lays her head against my chest. âExactly. See, now youâre learning.â
âI want you to get your concealed weapon permit. I know a guy who can push yours through quickly.â
She lifts her head. âWhat makes you think I donât have one already?â
âDo you?â
âYes. I even have a fancy little revolver.â
âWell, arenât you full of surprises?â
âIt wouldnât be a surprise.â She inches up and brushes a kiss over my jaw, down to my neck. âIf you werenât so fascinated with my vibrator, you wouldâve found the little gun safe in my bottom drawer.â
I growl and gently roll us, pushing her back flat to the mattress. âIs that right?â
She loops her arms around my neck. âYup.â
âIâll have to investigate better next time.â I turn my head, taking in the space Iâve called home for years. âOr have you move in with me.â
âHere?â
âWhy not?â
âI donât know. Would your brothers really approve? Especially after today?â
I roll to the side, but keep my arm around her waist. âTodayâs not your fault either.â
âItâs still going to drag your club into something with the Wolf Knights.â
âNo oneâs going to blame you for that.â
She yawns, and I kiss her forehead. âGet some rest. Weâll talk more about it in the morning.â
A few minutes later she stretches out on her stomach. I run my hand over her hair and down her back until her soft snores tell me sheâs out.
I lay there, one arm resting on my chest, the other behind my head and stare at the ceiling, thinking of everything that happened and everything thatâs coming.
Sleep evades me and eventually, I give up. Charlotteâs sound asleep and safe here.
The clubhouse is dark and mostly quiet as I pad down the stairs. Light spills out from under the war room door.
Looks like Iâm not the only one up.
At this hour, it used to be Rock weâd find in the war room. Since heâs in his own house now, itâs probably Z.
Thereâs also a light next door in the office, but that doesnât register for me right away. I open the war room door, expecting Z to be at the table.
Instead, I get an eyeful.
I recognize Hope first. Or rather her long hair cascading down her bare back as Rock strips off her sweatshirt. Sheâs sitting on the table facing him and theyâre obviously about five seconds from fucking. He leans over her, pushing her down against the table, then catches sight of me.
One hard get the fuck out stare is all I need to snap me out of my shock.
I jump back and quietly shut the door.
âWhatâre you doing up, bro?â
âShit!â
Zâs standing by the office, corners of his mouth turned up in a smirk.
âNothing much. Just been traumatized,â I whisper loudly, as I stride over to him.
He waves his hand, inviting me to follow him inside. âRock came over earlier to talk. Hope followed a little later. Theyâre going through some stuff. Thought I should leave them alone.â
âNext time hang a sock on the door or something to warn the rest of us.â
âAw, nothing you havenât seen before, little brother.â
âThatâs different.â I shake my head. âIâll never look at our table the same.â
âChrist. On the table? Figured theyâd do it on his throne, or one of the couchesââ
I cut him off. âCan we not.â
Z chuckles. âWhatâs got you up?â
âTake your pick.â
âRough fuckinâ day.â He drops into his chair and one of the dogs pops out from under the desk and sets his head on Zâs leg. âWrath set that meeting up with Whisper.â
âWhen?â
âTomorrow.â
âI want to be there.â
âYou think thatâs a good idea?â
âCome on, Z. Give me some credit.â
He sits, stroking his hand over
Zipperâs head for a few seconds. âSeems unimportant now, but I looked into those transcripts.â
âAnd?â
âIt fit her story.â
I grunt in response. Never expected different.
âIâve been thinking about who they might have been in business with six or seven years ago.â
I raise an eyebrow, surprised Zâs still interested.
âYou think itâs possible he set her up?â he asks. âSome way to get in with another club?â
âAfter today, anythingâs possible with that asshole.â
He nods and works his jaw from side to side as if heâs contemplating whether he should say whatâs on his mind. I brace myself. Zâs not one to second-guess giving his opinion.
âIs it possible he did it?â
âFuck. Not gonna lie, itâs crossed my mind.â I run my hand over the back of my neck, considering how much to share. âAt the hospital, she was told there was more than one.â
Z sits back and sighs. âJesus. Any man who thinks thatâs okay to do to a woman deserves a bullet to the head.â He points at the door with an imaginary gun and pulls the trigger. âOne bullet.â
I stretch my legs out in front of me, getting comfortable in Rockâs office chair. âNow I understand why she didnât believe me when I told her we didnât tolerate that stuff here.â
âPlease. Clubhouse or college campus. Seems like that shit goes on everywhere lately. Some days I think weâre the only ones who actually have a moral compass.â He snorts. âWhich is really fucked up.â
âAgreed.â I put my hand down at my side, snapping my fingers. Ziggy lifts his head and trots over to have his ears scratched.
âIâm patching Charlotte.â
Z glances up. âSheâll make a good olâ lady.â
I take that to mean Z will vote yes. âThanks.â
âGive it a little time, though,â he cautions.
âBecause of this?â
âBecause of everything.â He pins me with a more serious stare. âLet her interact with the girls more.â
âOh, man,â I groan, understanding what heâs saying. âTrinity even said sheâs over it.â
âIâve known Trin a long time.â Zâs mouth quirks. âYou know how it is. Talk shit about me, Iâll let it go. Talk shit about my friend, I wonât be as quick to forgive.â
I snort at the truth of his sentiment. And Iâd be pissed, except I know that down the road, heâll defend Charlotte the same way. Hell, he already announced in front of everyone that he trusted Charlotte.
After what Charlotte went through today, his suggestion might seem cruel, but no one gets voted into this club out of pity. Not even the old ladies. Thatâs not how things work in our world.
Every person earns their place in the Lost Kings MC.
CHAPTER SIXTEEN
The next morning, I feel like someone worked me over with a baseball bat.
Groaning, I stretch and roll over, bumping into Marcel. âYouâre here.â
âWhere else would I be, Sunshine?â
âI woke up last night, and you were gone.â I hesitate for a second, hating that I sound so needy. âWas everything okay?â
Marcel pulls me into his arms, and I take refuge against his warm, bare skin. âI couldnât sleep, so I went downstairs. I didnât want to wake you up.â
âOh.â
Marcel must sense my unease or doubt. He brushes the hair off my forehead. âLook at me. I went downstairs and talked to Z. Thatâs it.â
I donât want him to think I donât trust him. Not after everything heâs done for me. âI trust you. Yesterday was soââ
âYour uncle put a lot in your head. I get it.â He throws the covers back and taps my leg. âCome on. You must be hungry. Letâs get you fed.â
âUgh, if anything, I feel sick.â
âEven more reason to get up and face the day.â
âYouâre mean.â
Marcel ignores my reluctance, and thirty minutes later I find myself downstairs about to sit down and have breakfast with Z, and two other brothers whose names I donât remember.
âHow are you feeling today, sweetheart?â Z asks.
âLike a truck full of baseball bats ran me over,â I answer as Marcel pushes in my chair.
Z seems to read the uncertainty in my expression correctly. âCharlotte, I donât know if you met him before, but this is Dex,â he says, tipping his head toward the bigger guy sitting next to him. âAnd thatâs Ravage.â
Both of them give me a nod and tell me theyâre sorry about what happened. No one even pretends that they donât know about my uncleâs attack. Itâs oddly refreshing.
As weâre finishing breakfast, Hope and Trinity join us.
After we go through the whole how are you this morning ritual, Hope asks, âDo you know when you can go back to your apartment?â
To my surprise, Marcel has an answer. âLiam is supposed to call me when her place has been cleared.â
Trinity reaches over and squeezes my hand. âLet me know when, and Iâll come over and help you.â
âThank you.â
After breakfast, I meet Rock, Wrath, and Murphy in the living room.
âHowâs your girl?â Wrath asks.
Surprised thatâs his first question, I answer with a clipped, âFine.â
âYou good?â Rock asks. His way of asking if Iâll behave when we meet with Whisper.
âWonât say a word, Prez. Promise.â
Z and the girls find us outside.
âYou ridinâ?â Z asks.
âYup.â
âAll right, brother.â Z holds out his fists for a bump.
âWhen did that happen?â Wrath asks.
âMurphy and I went out yesterday.â My gaze moves to Charlotte. âBefore everythingâ¦â
âGot it.â Wrath holds out his hand and as I slap it, he pulls me in for a hug and smacks me on the back a few times.
Charlotte watches the whole scene with wide eyes and a hint of a smile.
âYou taking this rat bike to our meet?â Z bitches. âMakes us all look bad.â
Murphy and Rock share a look, but neither of them tell Z to shut up, so I guess thatâs up to me. âFuck off.â
Everyoneâincluding Zâgets a laugh out of that.
Heidi meets us in the garage with Alexa and I hold my arms out for her. âMorning, baby.â
She squeals and makes her usual morning happy noises along with clapping her hands. Sheâs even happy to have Charlotte hold her for a minute.
âAre you sure you donât mind, Hope?â Heidi asks.
Hope waves off my sisterâs concern. âIâm meeting Mara for lunch, and sheâs bringing her daughter. Cora loves Alexa. They always have fun together.â
âThank you. I always worry she doesnât have any other kids to be around.â
âI have an easy way to fix that,â Z says. âI see three fertile couples right in front of me.â
âShut the fuck up,â Wrath snarls, while everyone else laughs.
Murphy opens his mouth âIâmââ
âIf you say youâre working on it Iâll kill you,â I say, cutting him off.
Heidi rolls her eyes and turns to Hope. The two of them move away to talk without us bothering them.
Charlotte settles her hand on my shoulder. âYou know eventually theyâre probably going to have more kids, right?â
âNot you too. What did I say about conspiring with him?â I point at Murphy whoâs shaking with laughter.
âI didnât even tell her to say that,â he says.
The rest of my brothers canât hide their laughter either.
Z must deem me âhealedâ or some shit because he gives me even more grief when we get to my bike. âLook at that thing. Where the hell is Charlotte supposed to sit?â
Well that certainly quiets everyone down.
Charlotte glances at the single seat. âIâm fine.â
âIâve had it since I was a prospect,??
? I explain to her. âItâs seen better days. The other one, The one I crashed was newer and a lot nicer, Iââ
She stops me with a hand on my arm. âYou donât have to explain yourself.â She leans into me and bumps me with her shoulder. âWhen youâre ready, Iâll go shopping with you and let you know what I like.â
I wrap my arms around her waist and pull her close, sliding my hands down to cup her ass. âIs that right?â
âWell, my ass wonât fit on one of those tiny pillion seats.â
Leaning down, I brush my lips against her ear. âWhat did I tell you about trash-talking my girlfriendâs ass?â
Her eyes glitter with mischief. âI donât remember. I guess I need another lesson.â
I groan and close my eyes. This isnât the time for the painful erection only Charlotte can cause me.
She kisses my cheek. âYour brothers are waiting for you.â
âYouâre evil.â
No denials, only wicked laughter from my girl.
âLetâs go!â Z shouts. Rock, Wrath, and Murphy are all busy saying goodbye to their women. âFor fuckâs sake, weâre gonna be gone for two hours max. Not two months. Jesus.â
We ride in our regular formation to a park that borders Empire and Slater counties.
Neutral ground.
Whisperâs waiting for us with Hudson and Keeper.
âRock,â Whisper greets. The rest of us get a nod.
Instead of, Sergeant-at-Arms, Whisperâs patch now reads President.
Whisper gets right to the point. âAppreciate you giving us time to sort this out.â
âOur clubs have a long history of working together, Whisper,â Rock reminds him.
He acknowledges that with a nod. âMerlinâs been distracted.â He slides his gaze my way. âItâs been interfering in a few areas.â
âSeems heâs been a little too interested in our business lately. Both club and personal,â Rock says.
âMerlin wanted in on Ironworks,â Keeper explains.
âThat why heâs been bringing South of Satan MC into our territory?â Rock asks, staring Whisper right in the eyes.
Keeper shifts and looks away.
Whisper dips his head but doesnât acknowledge their interference in our business.
âThatâs a relationship Merlin was pursuing on his own,â Hudson says, earning a stern look from Keeper.
