Page 32 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
âSo,â she says after a few minutes of watching the guys. âYou two are getting serious?â
âI guess so.â
âGuessing is for kids. If he felt the need for so much honestyââ
âActually, he didnât. I kind of assumed and he tried to shut me down.â
She nods slowly as if that doesnât surprise her. âHe must think youâre serious if he brought you here. So, are you or arenât you?â
âI like him a lot.â
She shakes her head. âLike. Jesus,â she mutters. âAre you trying to fool yourself or me?â
âWhat are you talking about?â
âYou went after me pretty hard there without any actual evidence.â
âYou must think Iâm a shitty lawyer.â
Harsh laughter bursts out of her. So loud, the guys glance over. âI hadnât gotten there yet,â she finally says.
âIâm sorry.â
âI believe you.â She gives me a once over. âI think you more than like him.â
âYeah, I more than like him,â I admit.
âHow does that work with your uncle being a Wolf Knight?â
âWhat?â The question throws me because Iâve never considered myself a Wolf Knight.
She shifts again putting both feet on the step below us. âYouâre smarter than that, Charlotte. You know the deeper you get with him,â she nods at Teller, âthe more it becomes an issue. Whereâs your loyalty? With your man? Or with your blood?â
âWow. You donât fuck around.â
âNo. Not about the club.â
âMy loyalty would be with himâ¦with my olâ man.â
Sheâs patient through my bumbling answer but jumps in as soon as I get it out. âNot your blood? Thatâs not a deal-breaker here, Charlotte. This club is family. Itâs our loyalty that binds us together, not blood. And everyone has their reasons. But youâre smart enough to understand why turning your back on your blood raises red flags about you, right?â
âI have reasons too,â I whisper.
âCare to share?â
I lift my gaze to hers, wishing my eyes werenât wet with unshed tears. âNo.â
She nods slowly. âDoes he know?â
âNot yet,â I whisper.
âWell, instead of studying the notches on his bedpost, itâs time to work on your communication skills. Start talking about the truths that actually matter.â
CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE
The drama with the girls blew over faster than I expected. By evening Charlotte and Trinity seemed to have cleared the air and patched things up. Trinity waved off my apology.
Wrath wasnât as forgiving, not that I expected him to be. He strongly encouraged me to accept Merlinâs invitation, so Sunday I find myself at Black Lake Park, attending the Wolf Knightâs picnic. Am I thrilled about it? Fuck no.
Iâm even less thrilled that Murphy insisted he be by my side.
And bring my sister.
You know, to keep it family friendly.
Charlotte thought it was a great plan.
I wasnât so sure.
Even though Iâd been invited, Rock called to speak to Merlin. President to President. To make sure both of us wearing our colors in Wolf Knights territory wouldnât be seen as an insult. Rock also wanted to feel Merlin out and be sure what we were walking into.
This wasnât uncommon. Anytime we went through another clubâs territory, it was customary to call ahead.
Merlin greets us respectfully enough. Shakes our hands. Gives his niece a big hug. When the greetings are over, I jerk my head to the side.
âI know youâre busy today, but when you have a moment, can we talk?â I ask with as much respect as I can come up with.
âSure thing.â
Eventually, I settle down and some of the tension eases out of me. Try to have a good time for Charlotteâs sake. Even though she seems devoid of any interest in being here. She watches Heidi closely, offering to go everywhere with her, including the bathroom.
Watching them walk across the lawn to the park restroom, my gaze scans each side of the building.
âWhyâs Charlotte so nervous around her family?â Murphy asks in a low voice. I turn a fraction to see heâs also watching where the girls went.
âNo clue.â I glance around at the assembled bikers and old ladies of the Wolf Knights MC. âExcept for Merlin, sheâs not related to any of them, I guess.â
Murphy sits up, smacking my arm with the back of his hand. Twice. âHeadâs up, two oâclock.â
My gaze travels to where his attentionâs riveted. Four men in South of Satan MC cuts stroll across the lawn, without a care in the world.
We watch as they stop to shake hands and talk to Merlin and Keeper.
âSince when are they pals with SOS?â
One of the guys turns and Murphy jerks his chin. âBennington Vermont chapter.â
âHas to be the assholes who keep trying to push into Ironworks.â
âShould we go introduce ourselves?â he asks with an unhealthy gleam in his eyes.
âLetâs see how it shakes out.â
The four SOS members donât seem to know anyone besides Merlin and one other guy who I havenât met yet.
Merlin chooses this moment to amble over to me. âLetâs have that chat.â
I stand and Murphyâs right at my side. Leaning back, I whisper to him. âI got this. Make sure the girls are okay. They donât come out of there in the next five minutes, go get them.â
âYeah, okay.â
Merlin and I walk side by side down to the lake. Lake is probably an exaggeration. Itâs more of a filthy duck pond.
âWhatâs on your mind? You askinâ permission to marry my niece already?â
I almost choke. Not because the idea of marrying Charlotte bothers meâthe opposite, actuallyâbut because asking Merlinâs permission for anything would never happen.
âNot yet.â
He doesnât seem to care for that answer.
âDo we have a problem?â I ask.
âNot that Iâm aware of. Your prez and I had a good chat.â
âThis has nothing to do with either of our clubs.â I wave my hand between the two of us. âDo we have a problem? You and me.â
He sets his jaw in a tight line. âNo.â
âGood. You got questions you need answered, bring them to me. Not Charlotte. Understand?â
His dark eyes drill into me and I donât flinch. Patiently, I wait until he gives me an answer.
âYeah.â He takes a step closer. âI understand fine.â
We stare each other down for a few seconds before he lets out an exasperated sigh. âWhile I have you here, I want you to arrange a sit-down with your prez.â
âWhy do you need me? You can have a sit down with him anytime you want.â I pause, thinking that over. âWell, not in the next week or so, heâs goinâ on a run.â
Merlin nods as if heâd been testing me and I supplied the right answer. âHe mentioned that. Wasnât sure if he was dicking me around though.â
âRockâs pretty straightforward. If he straight up didnât want to meet with you, heâd say so.â
He stares and works his stiff jaw for a few seconds before speaking. âHe ainât been real straightforward about whatâs goinâ on in Ironworks.â
Now this I hadnât expected today and I need to tread carefully here. Itâs not my place to discuss what weâre doing in Ironworks with another clubâs president.
My silence doesnât deter him. âWith Vipers gone, seems our two clubs shouldâve split Ironworks territory evenly.â
How in the world does he figure that? Wolf Knights didnât do dick to help us with the Vipers after their last president stepped down. My club suffered the losses and took the risks.
âI donât know anything about that, Merlin. Weâre doing what weâve always done. Protecting whatâs ours.â
By the way his eyes bore into me, heâs not satisfied with that answer.
I tip my head toward the party. âSeems like youâve been making friends.â
His eyes narrow and a smirk plays at the corner of his mouth. âIâm a friendly guy.â
âThatâs what I hear.â I glance around the picnic tables. âCharlotteâs mom come today?â
âNah, supposed to, but sheâs got issues.â He doesnât bother to elaborate and I donât ask.
âYou understand that if you do anything to hurt my niece, Iâm gonna come at you hard, right, Teller?â
The sudden change in topic throws me for a second. A second that thankfully I donât spit out the âfuck youâ forming on my tongue.
His threat seems to be more about him than Charlotte, but I play along. âUnderstood.â
âYour club gonna be respectful? I wonât have you passing my nieceââ
âStop right there. Thatâs not what goes on in our club. Sheâs with me and only me.â I jerk my thumb in the general direction of where weâve been hanging out this afternoon. âYou think Iâd let my own sister get passed around?â
He wants to respond with some smart-ass remark, I can see it in the smirk heâs wearing. But he stops himself.
He never actually answers the question though.
âI canât believe I never knew your uncle was in a club,â Heidi says as weâre both staring into the small, dirty mirrors over the even dirtier sinks. âThis is so cool.â
âI never thought so.â
She pops the cap back on her lipstick and faces me. âReally?â
Iâm not sure how to talk about this with Heidi. Sheâs my boyfriendâs little sister, so I want to be friends with her. Besides that, I actually like her. Iâm also her attorney, so itâs weird. I feel about a hundred compared to her nineteen.
âWeâre not close.â
âOh.â She stares as if she has a few things to add, but doesnât want to offend me. âMaybe itâs something you could use to relate to some of your clients. You know?â
Her suggestion hits me in the gut. Iâve always tried to bury my past. Using it to break through to my clients never occurred to me. âHow would I do that when some of my clients are so secretive?â I tease to cover up the epiphany I just had.
She ducks her head and I feel bad for teasing her.
âCome on.â I motion toward the door. âWe should go before your man comes and hunts you down.â
âLike Marcel wouldnât come in here after you.â
A nervous chuckle titters out of me and I follow her outside where we do run into someone. Just not who I expected.
âCharlotte, I havenât seen you in forever. How you been?â Hudson asks. Taller and heavier than I remember, I still recognize him. He was a hangaround when we were teenagers. Guess heâs a full-patch now.
âGood.â I nod at his cut. âHow long have you been patched in?â
âGoing on ten years, sweetheart. Spent some time at one of the Canadian chapters, but Iâm back for good now.â
âThatâs nice.â
His gaze roams to Heidi and he quirks an eyebrow. âMurphyâs girl, right?â
âYup.â She threads her arm through mine. âCharlotteâs with my brother.â
Hudsonâs gaze slowly swings back to me. âSo youâre the one responsible for bringing Kings to our party.â He says it with a smile, but itâs cold and stiff, so it comes out more threatening than teasing.
âChuck knows.â Shit, I hate the defensive tone in my voice. I donât owe anyone an explanation.
âHeidi,â Murphy calls out, striding over the lawn, eyes on us. âEverything okay?â
Hudson turns, narrowing his eyes. âTheyâre fine. Was having a chat with my friend Charlotte. We go way back.â
The way he says way back makes it sound like weâve fucked, which is so not the case.
Murphyâs eyes take on a hard gleam, but he flashes a tight smile and holds out his hand. âHow you been, Hudson?â The two bikers shake, even though neither looks happy about it.
Subtlety doesnât seem to be Murphyâs specialty. He pushes between Heidi and me, taking her hand and casually slinging his arm over my shoulder.
Youâd think Iâd be offended at his blatant caveman act, but I appreciate the support. No matter what, he has my back just because Iâm with his best friend.
They talk about superficial bike stuff and I zone out, letting my gaze wander the party. I finally spot Teller down by the lake talking to my uncle. They shake hands and Teller makes his way back to where weâd been sitting.
Murphy notices that Iâm distracted. âCome on over and say hi to Teller,â he invites Hudson. It sounds more like a challenge than an invitation.
âIâll stop by in a few,â he promises before leaving.
âYou all right?â Murphy asks. In a lower voice, he adds. âI wouldnât have stormed over, but you looked freaked.â
âIâm fine. Thanks.â
He turns, crushing Heidi against him. âTrouble,â he teases. She leans up to kiss him and he ducks away. âNo lipstick kisses,â he warns.
âAw, come on.â She pouts. âItâs kiss-proof, I promise.â The way her lips curve into a playful smile, suggests they engage in this game often.
He still shakes his head. And our whole walk back they tease each other with Heidi trying to jump up and kiss him and Murphy ducking her painted lips. Finally, he stops and whispers something in her ear that makes her blush.
Breaking away from him, she grabs my hand and we jog back to our spot.
âWhatâs wrong?â
She laughs. âNothing. He had some suggestions for where he wouldnât mind lipstick marks.â
It takes me a second to decipher that and when I do, I groan.
Murphy catches up to us easily, wrapping his arms around her waist and lifting her off the ground. âGotcha.â He peppers her cheek with kisses before setting her down.
âMust you maul my sister everywhere we go?â Teller asks with a smirk. For once, he doesnât seem annoyed at their open affection. Something seems to have shifted since he and Heidi had their heart-to-heart. He holds his hand out and I take it.
âStop harassing him. He came over to make sure we were okay.â
Teller glances at me then Murphy. âWhatâd I tell you about you two conspiring?â
Murphy holds up his hands. âHudson was lookinâ at your girl a little too wolfishly for my taste.â
I chuckle at his joke.
Teller stands and raises an eyebrow. âSomeone I need to have a chat with?â
âNo.â I use my stern voice, to cut that off before it gets started. âWe were friends before he even patched in. Havenât seen him in a while. Thatâs all.â I give him the side-eye. âWhat were you and Chuck talking about?â
âNothing exciting.â
âYeah, right.â I let my gaze travel through the party, noticing a couple bikers I donât recognize. âMy uncle has another club here?â I mutter to Teller who nods.
He takes my hand, making it clear weâre together. When weâre closer to the crowd, he slips his arm around my waist.
It surprises me how much I like feeling claimed by him in front of everyone. Protected too.
For once, I appreciate Marcelâs size and muscle for more than the aesthetic beauty.
I also assume heâs carrying at least one weapon.
Why my brainâs gone worst-case-scenario isnât something I examine too closely. Instead, I soak up Marcelâs warmth and strength as we approach Whisper, the sergeant-at-arms of my uncleâs club.
âHey, girlie,â Whisper says, kissing my cheek. âWhere you been hiding?â
âIn plain sight.â
He chuckles and nods at Teller and Murphy.
Slowly, we make our way over to the crew of other bikers. âSouth of Satan. Sounds like a bunch of overcompensating pussies,â I mumble.
Teller chokes, his body shaking with laughter heâs holding back.
My uncle makes a big show of hugging and slobbering all over me. He claps Tel
ler on the back and pulls him forward. âMy future nephew-in-law,â he announces to everyone.
What now?
If my uncle expected Teller to deny it or run away, heâs out of luck. Teller nods. âOur clubs have been friends for years. Little merger was bound to happen.â
If I didnât suspect Marcel had some ulterior motive, I might balk at the primitive joining-of-the-caveman-tribes-through-marriage insinuation. But Iâm so uncomfortable here, so willing to put all my trust in Teller to keep me safe, that at this point I wouldnât so much as blink if he tossed me over his shoulder and carried me to the car.
Actually, I might prefer to it what comes out of my uncleâs mouth next.
âThunderstormâs coming. Weâre taking this party back to the clubhouse.â He gives Marcel a pointed look. âYou should join us.â
It sounds more like a demand than a request.
I memorized the names of the SOS members as soon as Merlin introduced us. None of them are officers, which I find interesting.
âCan I have a word?â Murphy says against my ear.
âYeah.â
Merlinâs moved on to directing people to pack up their shit. Heidiâs talking to one of the old ladies she knows and Charlotte joins her.
âWe need to get home and relieve Hope. Sheâs watching Alexa.â
âGo ahead. I got this.â
He levels me with a stare he doesnât use on me often. âYou shouldnât go alone. We donât know what these jokers are up to.â
âMerlinâs not gonna let anything happen to Charlotte.â
He raises an eyebrow. âYou sure about that?â
No, not really.
âWe donât know these new assholes,â he insists. âDonât want one of them gettinâ the idea that âcause youâre on your own, they can jerk your colors or some bullshit.â
âThey can try.â
Murphyâs glare intensifies.
âFine,â I concede. âI hear you. But if I donât go, it looks like Iâm scared. Or worse, Merlin thinks Iâm being disrespectful. Neither help us.â
He heaves out a breath. âYouâre right. Just remember thereâs a difference between fearless and reckless.â
âThatâs rich coming from you.â He doesnât even crack a smile. âYou know where Iâll be. Something happens to me, Merlin knows the whole clubâll be at his front door.â
