Page 30 of Beyond Reckless (Lost Kings MC 8)
âOkay, maybe not. Wrath definitely hazed her a little. But she gave it right back. More importantly, she showed Trinity respect. Took Heidi under her wing.â He glances at the door and mumbles, âStood by her man when he needed her. Thatâs the shit that matters, Charlotte.â
âTell me Wrath was meaner to Hope than he was to me.â
He snorts. âItâs not quite the same.â His fingers tangle in my hair, tilting my head back. âI was proud of you. You stood your ground. Wrath respects that. Itâll still take him time to really trust you.â
âI understand.â I look around, suddenly feeling skeeved. âSo how many girls have been in this room?â
He rolls to his back and stares at the ceiling. âSurprised it took you this long.â
âMe too. Come on.â
âEnough.â
Another, worse thought, occurs to me. âDid I hang out with any of them last night?â
âYou really want to do this?â
âWell, I know you didnât sleep with Hope.â
He snorts like the ideaâs ridiculous.
âOr Trinity.â
He looks away.
âDid you?â
His face turns to stone and he throws the covers back, rolling out of bed. âDonât pull at this thread, Charlotte. Itâs only going to hurt people.â
CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE
As much as I tried to skip the whole former partners talk, Iâm sure it will come up again at some point. Does Charlotte have a right to know? I guess. Iâd hate for her to find out later. Itâs also exposing some pretty shitty behavior on my part. Even if I didnât know it at the time. Maybe I should ask Trinity what she thinks so I donât end up hurting people Iâve already hurt enough. Iâm sure as fuck not bringing it up with Wrath.
Murphy texts me that he and Heidi are coming over to have breakfast with us and to get my ass downstairs.
âWeâre wanted downstairs.â
Charlotte groans. âI donât think I can handle any more of Wrathâs inquisition.â
âItâs Murphy and Heidi.â
âThat, Iâm happy to do.â
There are plenty of people left over from the party. None of them awake or sober, so I donât bother asking if anyone wants to join us for breakfast.
The dining room holds a few more sleeping bodies and Charlotte chuckles. âNow this Iâm familiar with.â
I push the swinging door into the kitchen, finally finding Heidi and Murphy.
âThought weâd eat at the kitchen table since everythingâs a mess out there,â Heidi explains.
âFine by me.â
Murphyâs waiting at the table, eyes on my sisterâs ass as usual. I snap my fingers in front of his face. âWhereâs Alexa?â
âWith Hope. Jesus. What do you think, we just toss her in her crib and walk out?â
âCalm your tits.â
âFuck you.â
âKnock it off,â Heidi scolds.
Charlotte lets out a nervous chuckle.
âIgnore them,â Heidi says. âThey do this all the time.â
Iâm not sure how I feel about Heidi hanging out, cooking for us in my clubhouse. Itâs fucking weird, but I keep my mouth shut since it doesnât seem to bother Murphy.
As weâre finishing up, my phone goes off and I pull it out, checking the text under the table. Charlotte leans over. âEverything okay?â
âBro, put the phone away at the table,â Murphy jokes.
I lift my head, and without using any of the gray matter between my ears explain, âSerenaâs in town. Wants to know if itâs okay for her to come up next weekend.â
Murphyâs fork clatters on his plate and he shoots a death-glare at me. âWhy?â
I donât think he means why does she want to come up here? No, he means why the fuck would you bring her up in front of your sister?
Heidi falls quiet, barely moving.
âWhoâs Serena?â Charlotte asks. âAnd why is she texting you?â
âGood question,â Murphy snarks. âWhy are you in contact with her?â
Good one, little brother.
âIâm not. I havenât heard from her in forever.â I glance at my sister. âDonât sweat it.â
âWhat the fuck is wrong with you?â Murphy snaps.
My sister drills me with an intense stare before placing a hand on Murphyâs arm. âI donât care. As long as sheâs not rude to me, I couldnât care less,â she answers evenly. She turns her big brown eyes my way. âGo ahead, tell her itâs fine.â
Itâs pretty obvious who Serena is. A muffler bunny.
Heidi acted like she didnât care, but five seconds later she jumps up and leaves the table. Murphy watches her go, then turns on Teller.
âWhat the fuck is the matter with you?â
âIs she okay?â I ask.
Murphyâs simmering with anger, but he turns to me and in an even voice asks, âWould you go talk to her, Charlotte? Please?â Iâm not sure if heâs asking because he genuinely thinks I have something to offer Heidi or because he doesnât want to kick Tellerâs ass in front of me.
Either way, Iâm worried about Heidi so I leave to go find her. If Murphy kicks my boyfriendâs ass, Iâm sure it wonât be the first time. Or the last time the two of them get into it. They seem to have that sort of relationship, and I wonât interfere.
I find Heidi outside staring into the woods, arms crossed over her chest.
âHeidi? Is everything all right?â
She sniffles and scrubs her hands over her face before turning and flashing a quick smile at me. âIâm fine.â
I approach her slowly unsure of what to say.
âDo you want to go back inside?â
She gives a quick shake of her head. âNot yet.â
We stand there together quietly for a few minutes.
âUghâ¦how many of his ex-fuckbuddies do I have toâ¦Never mind.â
âSerena?â
Her mouth twists down. âIt doesnât matter. It was before we were together.â
âThat sort of comes with dating someone in a club, Heidi. You must know that.â Why hello, pot. Giving the kettle advice, are you?
She glares at me. âYeah, Iâm well aware. Thanks.â
âI didnât meanââ
âI know you didnât.â She waves her hand toward the clubhouse. âIâve gotten over it with some. I mean, thereâs still stuff I wish I didnât know, but itâs such ancient history.â She seems to think about her next statement. âItâs not like I sit around asking which bunny heâs boned. Iâd rather not know. Serenaâs probably the closest he has to an âexâ though, you know?â
âYour brother and Serena?â Why am I making this worse?
âDonât know. Donât wanna know. Probably.â She shakes her head. âFucking Marcel,â she mumbles.
Yeah, I have to wonder why her brother blurted that out. It seemed a little cruel to do to the sister he says he loves so much.
After a few minutes, she straightens up. âIt is what it is, you know? Either I trust him or I donât. Either I can forget the past and move on or I can make both of us miserable.â
âThatâs a very adult attitude, Heidi. Iâve known women twice your age who still havenât figured that out.â
âI love him.â
âI can see that. I can see how much he loves you too.â
She gives me a weak smile.
âDo you trust him?â
Her head tilts. âBlake? Yes. Heâs always been honest with me. He already feels awful about some of it. Why make him feel worse?â She stops and glances down at her shoes, tapping her feet a few times before speaking. âI hurt him when I married Axel,â she whispers. âI knew it was a mistake and I went through with it anyway. Heâs never once made me feel bad about it.â She shrugs. âIâm sorry you had to come out here and listen to all this drama.â
âOh, honey.â I wrap an arm around her shoulders. âThis is not drama. Iâve seen olâ ladies throw dishes at their ol??
? man and rip the extensions right off a club whoreâs head.â
Her nose wrinkles. âGross.â She glances at the clubhouse again. âThat kind of stuff definitely does not happen here.â
âAre we really having this talk again?â Murphy growls after Charlotte goes after Heidi.
âWhich talk is that?â
âDonât fuck with me, Marcel. Go apologize to Heidi right now. And so help me if you upset her again, Iâm kicking your fucking ass.â
âLove to see you try, brother.â
He leans in, narrowing his eyes. âI wonât need to try. If you think Iâm going to go easy on you because your girlâs here, or youâre handicapped or because youâre my best friend, youâre dead wrong, bro.â
Murphy must be pissed to use the handicapped dig and bust out the sarcastic bro. A pang of regret vibrates through me for being so careless that I pushed my best friend this far.
âYeah, Iâll go talk to her.â
I pass Charlotte on my way to the living room and stop. âWhere is she?â
âOutside. She wanted a few minutes by herself.â
Theyâre a lot of questions rippling over Charlotteâs face. And it hits me that Iâm embarrassed she saw me act like such an asshole. Itâs a new feeling and not one I particularly care for.
She cocks her head and reaches out to grab my arm. âDonât go out there if youâre just going to be mean to her again.â
I glance down at the floor. âI was going to apologize.â
âGood.â She hesitates, probably looking for a tactful way to ask me for a ride home after my epic display of assholery. âDo you want to talk about it first?â she asks.
My head snaps up. âWhat?â
She flaps her hand in the air. âYou know. You. Me. Words. Exchange some?â
Lay out my feelings and leave myself vulnerable in front of a chick? No. Thatâs not something I do.
âNo. I got it.â
She lifts her chin and thereâs definitely some hurt or mistrust in her eyes as she focuses on me again. âIâll go hang in the dining room. You and I will talk later.â
Huh. So, sheâs not leaving. But she wants to talk. Iâm not sure which one Iâd prefer, honestly.
Heidiâs sitting on the round stone bench in front of the clubhouse, staring up at the sky.
âI hope youâre not here with more updates on Serena. Iâm really not in the mood,â she says without looking at me.
I drop down next to her and bump her shoulder with mine. âIâm sorry.â
âI donât get you, Marcel. You say youâre happy for us and hurry up with the wedding one day and the next youâre trying to start trouble between us. Why?â
I donât know what to say because Iâm not sure if I even know the answer myself.
âDo you miss having your buddy to go whoring around with?â she asks. By words alone, it seems like a nasty question, but she asks as if sheâs genuinely concerned thatâs the problem.
âNo. Thatâs not it.â So many emotions stir up Iâm not sure where to start. âYou cut him bad when you married Axel.â
She finally turns to face me. âYou think I donât know that?â
âI donât think you do. He spent a lot of time downstate and a couple other places taking on fights for money.â
Her head snaps up. âWhatâre you talking about?â
I shouldâve known Murphy didnât tell her about the fighting.
âNever mind.â
âWhy do you keep trying to cause problems with us?â
âIâm not.â
âYou are. Why bring Serena up like that?â
âYou worried about him?â
âNo. I trust Blake. You, not so much at the moment.â
Shit that hurts. âI love both of youââ
âYouâre trying to tell me our relationship puts you in an awkward place. Is that it?â
I think it over before answering. âMaybe.â
âBut youâre trying to start trouble where there isnât any. I donât care about Serena or whoever, whatever he did before.â
âYou donât?â
She glares at me. âWeâve talked about all of it. Which, by the way is so not your business.â She opens and closes her hands a few times and I wonder if sheâs considering clocking me. âIâm not a kid with a crush anymore. Weâreâ¦what we have is different. I love him so much. What we have now is real. Whatever he did in the past has nothing to do with us. With our family. He wants to adopt my daughter for Godâs sake. I didnât ask him to do that.â She stops and swipes a few tears off her cheeks. âHe wants to do that. Thatâs what matters to me. Who he is now.â
Iâm too stunned to respond.
âThat doesnât mean I want to constantly have my nose rubbed in it though.â She shoots a harsh look at me. âBy my brother no less.â
âI said Iâm sorry.â
âAre you worried that if we break up youâll have to pick a side?â
âI donât see you two breaking up.â
She continues as if I hadnât spoken. âYouâd side with the club. Iâm not stupid. I know that.â
âThatâs the problem. Youâre my sister. He hurts you, Iâll kill him. You hurt him, I donât know what to do.â
She lets out a long sigh. âI appreciate that, Marcel. I do. And I love how much you love both of us. But any problems we may or may not have are not your problem.â
âI canât help it.â
She leans over and kisses my cheek. âI know. Thatâs what makes you a good friend and such a good big brother.â
There. The painful twist in my chest when she says that. Because Iâm not a good brother. Iâve let her down in so many ways. I donât deserve her affection and loyalty. âI donât know about that,â I mumble.
She takes my hand and squeezes gently, silently asking me to add some detail.
âWhy didnât you ever tell me Grams hurt you?â I finally ask.
âDonât do this now,â she pleads.
âPlease, Heidi. When did she start hurting you? What did she do? Why didnât you tell me?â My voice rises with each question until Iâm almost shouting at her. âWhy would you tell Axel and not me?â
She sniffles and I realize Iâve made her cry. Again. Maybe I do deserve the ass-kicking Murphy promised.
âI didnât tell him,â she says through clenched teeth. âDo you really want to hear this? You wonât like it.â
âHeidi, I already hate all of it. But I need to know.â
She swipes at the tears on her cheeks and shakes her head. âHe saw marks on me one time.â
âWhere?â
âMy back. The backs of my legs.â
I realize Iâm barely taking in any air while I wait for her to continue.
âHe came by the house once when she was coming after me with a spatula. He was furious I wouldnât tell you. But I didnât know what to do. I didnât want you to be upset or think it was your fault.â
âJesus Christ, Heidi. When? How old were you when she started?â
Her shoulders lift and she sniffles again. âI donât know. After you moved out.â
âYou were a kid!â Itâs worse than I fucking thought.
âShe used to say I had nowhere else to go and if she put me in foster care Iâd never see you again.â
Knowing my grandmother used me as the chip to keep Heidi from telling on her makes this even worse.
All the times Iâd pick Heidi up and sheâd be so excited to see me and the way sheâd get quieter and quieter when it was time to drop her off come rushing back. Sometimes sheâd throw a tantrum or pretend to be sick and I assumed she was being a bratty little kid. But it was her way of coping with the horrible situation I was sending her back to. The thought lacerates every part of my insides.
âHeidi,â I whisper. âI never, ever would have let you stay there if Iâd known. I wouldâve figured out something. Iâd do anything to keep you safe.â
âShe threatened to cut off
our visits. I didnât know what to do. She told me you were a criminal and no court would let you have custody of me.â
âWhat bullshit.â
âI didnât know any better. Most of the time, as long as I got good grades and didnât do anything to bother or embarrass her, she left me alone.â
âI canâtââ My voice cracks and I shake my head, staring down at the ground. âIâm so sorry.â
Even the soft, gentle touch of her hand on my arm makes me feel like shit. âThis is why I never wanted you to know, Marcel. I knew youâd do this to yourself. Itâs over. Sheâs gone.â With more force in her voice, she adds, âI donât want to think about it anymore.â
âOkay, okay. Iâm sorry. Come here.â I pull her into my arms and she lets loose with so much sorrow.
âI try so hard. But somehow everything I do is always wrong, Marcel. Why?â
âShh, thatâs not true.â
âIt is, though.â She throws her hand in the air in the direction of the clubhouse. âI couldnât wait to get out of Gramsâ house and be an âadult.â I wanted to be taken seriously. And nowâ¦â
âToo much adulting?â
She lets out a sad laugh. âI guess.â
âYou know Iâm always here to help you. Just because youâre an adult now doesnât mean I stop being your big brother.â
âYeah, but half the time youâre mad at me.â
âIâm sorry. Maybe Iâm having a hard time with you being an adult.â I glance toward the clubhouse. âIâve known him a long time andââ
âAnd in a different way.â
âYeah. Itâs just weird for me having you two together. Iâm trying, Heidi.â
âI hate disappointing you.â
âIâm not disappointed at all. Youâre an amazing mother. Everything life throws your way, you tackle head on.â
âGrams always treated anything I did well like it was a reflection of her. But youâ¦youâre the one whose opinion mattered to me. Youâre the one I always wanted to make proud.â
I can barely force any words out past the lump in my throat. âI am. Iâm so proud of you.â
âBut now, I want you to have your own life.â She tilts her head, checking to see if weâre still alone. âI like Charlotte a lot. Sheâs got ride or die girl written all over her. So, please donât fuck it up.â
