He holds onto me for another second as if he doesnât want to leave, then shoulders his way through the door.
âSweet baby Jesus, I think my panties burst into flames from watching you two,â Mercy says from behind me.
Rolling my eyes toward the ceiling, I turn and face her. âI need coffee if youâre going to start firing off questions,â I announce, marching toward the kitchen with her right behind me.
âOh, so many, many questions.â She sounds positively giddy. âStarting with, I thought you didnât date bikers.â
âWeâre notâ¦Itâs complicated.â
She tilts her head and fixes her donât-bullshit-me stare on me. âWill your uncle be mad?â
âThatâs why itâs complicated.â I use my best âduhâ voice. While Mercy and I have known each other since grade school, we drifted apart in college and law school. She has some knowledge about my biker family, but not much. Since her family is full of stuffy politicians, the biker thing has always intrigued her.
âHeâs hot.â
I busy myself with making coffee. Except, I canât stop thinking about Marcel. About seeing him later. Iâve never suffered such an acute sense of loss when a guy left. Maybe itâs because of the abrupt way he had to leave.
Sure, thatâs it.
Mercy accepts the coffee I hand her and knowing where everything is in my kitchen, helps herself to cream and sugar.
âWhat are you up to?â I ask, hoping to take the attention off me.
Knowing full well what Iâm up to, she gives me a sly smile. âDad asked me to head up his reelection campaign. He thinks I can secure the firefighter vote by flashing some leg.â
Iâve always thought Mercyâs dad was a bit of a sleaze, and considering my family ties, thatâs saying something.
âAre you going to do it?â
âSure. Then next cycle, Iâll go work for his opponent.â
âI donât think it works that way.â
She chuckles and finishes her coffee. âCome on. I appreciate the coffee, but Iâm starving. Weâll never get into Gray Gates this late, so letâs run over to Ironworks and go to Nibbles. We have to hurry though or theyâll run out of French toast donuts.â
My mouth starts watering at the thought of a breakfast pocket from there. âOnly if you promise to share an egg and cheese pocket with me.â
âSure. You can tell me all about hottie-biker.â
I roll my eyes and follow her out the door.
Thirty minutes later, weâre stuffing our faces with what can only be described as heaven in fried-dough form. Warm, sweet and salty donut with a scrambled egg, bacon, and cheddar filling.
The two tables inside the tiny kitchen/restaurant were taken, so weâre sitting outside on a bench, balancing our goodies on our laps while we eat and gossip.
âIâm not even kidding. He delivers the orgasms on pure oral skills alone,â I say in a lowered voice.
Mercy huffs and throws a piece of donut at me. âLiar.â
I pluck the dough off my sleeve and pop it in my mouth. âNope. And heâs just as talented with his giant cock.â Iâm being overly ridiculous. Mercy and I go way back. She knows I usually donât get so graphic.
She slips her hand over her mouth, laughing into her palm. âIâm so damn jealous because I know youâre telling the truth. Youâre not usually so detailed,â she says, echoing my thoughts.
We both laugh.
âSo whatâs the catch?â she asks. âIf he knows how to fuck, then heâs probably broke or emotionally stunted. Something.â
Before answering, I glance around the small space. A mother with a toddler glares at us from across the way. âI havenât figured that out yet.â
âWell, thereâs the club thing. And your uncle. How much say does he have in your life?â
âNone.â I sigh. âHe still helps my mother out. But thatâs more out of obligation to my dad. I donât think heâd cut her off to spite me.â
âThen fuck whatever he thinks. Youâre a grown ass woman. You want to date some hottie-biker-stud with an amazing tongue, then you should do so.â
âThanks.â
We spend the afternoon meandering through the farmerâs market that takes up at least three streets of downtown Ironworks every Saturday.
As Iâm picking through heirloom tomatoes and wondering what Marcel likes to eat, my phone buzzes. A check of the screen shows itâs my brother.
âWhatâs up, bro?â
âWhatâs up is Iâm worried about you. You didnât answer any of my texts. I stopped by your place and youâre not there. I was worried that joker killed you and left you on the side of the highway.â
Shit. The last thing I wanted to do was make him worry. âIâm fine. Iâm at the farmerâs market with Mercy.â
Heâs silent.
âIâll make it up to you. Come over for dinner.â
âNone of that farmerâs market frou-frou crap, though. Good old-fashioned greasy pizza.â
âDeal.â
We agree on a time and hang up.
âAw, was little brother worried about you?â
âYeah, he wasnât thrilled I took Marcel home with me from the party.â
âYou picked up a guy while you were with your brother? How traumatizing.â She snickers and I smack her arm. âPoor kid.â
âYou mind heading back?â
âNope. Iâm supposed to have a strategy session with my dad tonight.â
âLucky you. Is making you work on Saturday nights his way of keeping you single forever?â
âNo. I think heâs trying to set me up with the deputy mayor.â
âGross.â
âRight? Heâs as old as my dad.â
Carterâs already sitting on my front steps when Mercy double-parks in front of my apartment. She reaches over and gives me a quick hug. âTell him I said hi. I want to get out of here before a CDTA bus rams into me from behind.â
âSounds kinky.â
âGet out of here.â She playfully pushes me out the door.
Carter walks down the steps to meet me and waves as Mercy drives away. âGet over here,â he says, pulling me up into a hug. âYou made me worry.â
I hug him back just as tight. âIâm fine.â
âWell, at least you were out with Mercy and didnât run away to Vegas or somewhere with the outlaw.â
âYou think Iâd get married and not invite you?â
âChrist, youâre not protesting the marrying the outlaw part? Thatâs just great,â he mutters as he follows me up the front steps.
Shit, that never occurred to me.
âIâm not marrying anyone,â I assure him.
âGood.â He shuts the door behind us and drops down onto my couch, covering his face with his hands. âMom was on my case all night about where you were and how you behaved, blah, blah, blah. I told her I dropped you off early.â
âIâm surprised she cares so much.â
âTen bucks says Uncle Chuck called and asked her.â
My nose wrinkles at the thought of my uncle in my business. Did he somehow see me leave with Marcel? Did someone see us together in the parking lot and report back to him?
âHowâs Mercy?â Carter asks.
âGood. We had fun. We went to Nibblesââ
âDamn. You two went there without me?â
âSorry. Next weekend.â
âRight. Youâll probably be too busy with whatâs-his-face.â
Thereâs no way I want to admit to my brother that I hope his prediction is right. âI doubt that.â
âSo are you seeing him again?â
âI think so. I like him.â Iâm not explaining that Marcel said heâd be over later. One, Carter might run screaming from my apartment. Two, what if Marcel changes his mind and doesnât show up?
âReally, Charlotte?â
Someone knocks on my door, saving me from answering my brother.
CHAPTER FIFTEEN
I make it bac
k to the clubhouse forty-five minutes later. The war room doorâs open and I poke my head inside to find Rock, Wrath, Murphy, and Z.
âWhatâs up, brother? Get some she-wolf tail?â Z taunts.
âFuck you. Why wasnât your horndog ass there?â
âPrez needed me elsewhere.â
âEverything all right?â Rock asks.
Yeah, Rockâs gonna expect information of some kind about last night. Unfortunately, I got nothing. Nothing except wanting the same woman under me again tonight and the next. âIâm working on something.â
I jerk my chin at Murphy. âCan I talk to you?â
Without answering, he stands and follows me into the living room. âWhatâs up?â
âHeidi okay?â
âBro, sheâs fine. Made friends with Tikiâs olâ lady. Sheâs Heidiâs age.â
âFuck, seriously? That dudeâs old enough to be my grandfather.â
âNo shit.â
âHeidi give you hell?â
âAs soon as we got home.â He snickers and shakes his head. Thereâs not a damn thing my sister does that he doesnât love. âSheâs not a fan of the Wolf Knights.â
I snort. âWho would be?â
The humor drains from his expression and he fixes me with a serious stare. âYou had her fucking worried last night.â He cocks his head and runs his gaze over me. âAnd this morning. Where the fuck were you?â
âDonât worry about it.â
He crosses his arms over his chest and raises an eyebrow. âSeriously?â
âItâs complicated.â
âComplicated?â
I get his confusion. Blake and I donât have many secrets between us. At least, we never used to. The Wolf Knights are a good motivator not to say anything about Charlotte yet, but itâs more than that. Sheâs something outside the club thatâs completely mine and I want to keep it that way for as long as possible. âCan you drop it?â
He pins me with an uncertain look and I feel bad for throwing up a wall between us. âI guess,â he finally says. âCome on.â He gestures toward the war room. âRock wanted to meet with the officers before everyone else gets here.â
âShit. I donât have my numbers.â
Murphy has the nerve to roll his eyes. âHurry the fuck up. Iâll let Rock know youâre coming.â He stops and places his hand on my arm. âYou had me worried too, you know.â
âSorry.â His admission makes me want to come clean with him, but itâs not the right time. âI had a good night.â
He swallows hard and nods once. âGood.â
Christ, I canât stand my best friend getting emotional because I finally got laid. I punch his shoulder. âYou look like youâre gonna cry.â
âFuck you,â he says without hitting back. Very unlike Murphy. I move to throw another punch and he easily blocks me by grabbing my wrist mid-air. âOne. Thatâs all you get. Hit me again and Iâm gonna drop you,â he warns.
I nod and back away. âIâll be right down.â
The first step makes me groan, my body reminding me that I heaped a lot of abuse on it last night. I take a long look at the stairs and seriously consider attending church without my numbers for probably the first time ever.
Thankfully, no oneâs around to witness my hesitation. Or how slow I make it up the stairs.
At least Iâm walking.
When I first left the hospital, they wanted to fit me with one of those damn chair lift things. No way was I going to move between floors like the old biddy in Gremlins.
Iâm practically limping by the time I slip the key into my lock and open the door to my room. Itâs stuffy, so I slide open the window, then throw myself on my bed and stare up at the ceiling.
A lot of images go through my head. All of them connected to Charlotte. How much I liked hearing her admit she wanted to see me later tonight. Because even if she hadnât, thereâs a good chance I wouldâve shown up on her doorstep anyway.
However, that nagging feeling about her relationship to Merlin wonât stop bothering me.
Maybe I should come clean at the table today.
No.
If Iâm not ready to tell Murphy, I definitely donât want to share with the entire club.
Not yet.
I need to have her to myself for a little longer.
One of two things will happen when I tell the club. Either my brothers will freak out and question me seeing her againâand letâs face it, thereâs not a damn thing right now that could keep me away from her.
Or thereâll be some demands for me to pry information about her uncleâs club out of her.
I donât want to do that either.
For one thing, I have a feeling she doesnât know much about Merlinâs activities. For another, sheâs way too smart. Sheâll know what Iâm up to and it will ruin whatever she and I might have started last night.
Now that I have that straight in my head, I log on to my computer, pull up the numbers I need and print them out. Before leaving my room, I grab the papers, a notebook, and grudgingly, my cane.
Rockâs wearing his impatient president face when I walk in. Heâs not big on us being late to church. His gaze drops to the cane Iâm using and his expression relaxes, something I both hate and appreciate.
He doesnât comment on the cane or ask if Iâm all right. Itâs not something heâd do in front of everyone else.
âWhere we at on the Wolf Knights?â he asks as soon as I take my seat.
Skipping right over me, Rock lifts his chin at Murphy.
âHeidi did okay, Prez.â
Rockâs gaze lands on me. âHow about you?â
âIâm working on something.â Even though I already decided I wasnât ready to share, I hate like hell lying to Rock, to my brothers. Strangely, I also feel like Iâm betraying Charlotte with my words.
Rock accepts my words without question and nods at the papers in my hand. âAnything exciting to report?â
Hereâs where Iâll alleviate some guilt for my omission. âActually, yes. The start-up social networking site we invested in is about to go public.â
âThat little punk in Cali?â Z asks.
âYup.â
âOkay, save that for the general meeting,â Rock instructs. He turns to Wrath. âYou good taking the vote today?â
Wrath nods then opens the door and motions for the others to join us at the table.
The first order of business is Crystal Ball, the MCâs strip club. Since Z manages it, he speaks first. âThereâs been a lull in business, but nothing we havenât seen before.â He lifts his chin in Dexâs direction. âWeâre looking into a few things to spice it up.â
âWhatâs spicier than naked chicks?â Ravage asks.
Rock raises an eyebrow at Dex, silently asking if he has anything to add. When Dex shakes his head, Rock turns his attention to me. âAll club accounts are flush. Recently paid our dues to National. Thereâs some talk that theyâre going to ask for an additional percentage to cover some legal fees, but nothing official yet.â
Rock nods as if he already knows this, which he probably does.
Everyone groans at the idea of kicking more money up the chain. It comes out of our general club fund, not our own pockets, but still, no one likes giving money away. I pass a spreadsheet around for everyone to look at and prepare myself for the next part.
Some of my brothers gave me shit when I wanted to invest in this kidâs business idea a few years ago. I knew back then it had the potential to be huge, and now that Iâm about to be proven right, I want to savor this moment. Ignoring the smile twitching at the corners of my mouth, I shuffle through the papers in front of me, pretending to study them. âWell, Evan is about to go public, so our investment is about to pay off huge.â
Sparky shouts, âYes! I knew that was a good one, Teller.â Heâs not lying, heâd been supportive of the hefty cash investment.
âSo, can we finally call ourselves the Billionaire Bikers Club?â Ravage snarks
. I give him the side-eye because he definitely gave me shit for that investment.
âNot quite but itâll be close,â I answer with a straight face.
Low whistles echo in the room. âShit, bro,â Bricks says. Heâd also questioned me at the time.
Ravage raises his arms in the air, and bends forward, bowing and pressing his forehead to the table. âIâm not worthy, bro. Iâll never question you again.â
Murphy cracks up and Stash slaps Ravage on the shoulder.
Bricks nods at me. âAll right.â
I turn and meet Rockâs eyes and he gives me a subtle, proud nod. âGood job.â
I swallow hard. âThanks.â Rockâs put a lot of faith and trust in me since I was a kid and his opinion matters the most to me.
Across the table, Wrath grins at me. âKnew youâd be perfect for that Treasurerâs patch.â
Wrathâs opinion is a close second and I nod at him once.
Sparky dances in his seat, waving his hand in the air, even though heâs maybe five feet away from Rock. âBoss! Boss! This seems like a good time to remind everyone we need to upgrade the solar panels.â He points to the roof with both hands as if weâre not aware of where the clubhouseâs solar panels rest. âAnd some of the equipment downstairs. And we should add another windmillââ
âEasy, brother,â Z says. âWe also need to replenish the clubâs legal fund and look into some tech upgrades to the property.â
Rock raises both hands in an âease upâ sort of gesture. âLetâs get the money in the clubâs account before we go spending it.â He glances at me. âYou good?â he asks.
âYup. I have an LLC set up and in place. I should have hard numbers in a few weeks. And weâll need to decide what weâre selling and what weâre keeping.â
âKeep us posted.â Rockâs gaze settles on Murphy. âWhatâd you learn last night?â
Murphy sits up, placing his elbows on the table and lacing his fingers together. âWell, Heidi made friends with Tikiâs old lady, whoâs quite loose-lipped.â
âIâm sure thatâs not all thatâs loose on her,â Ravage quips.
No one laughs.
âShe says theyâve made a lot of trips to Vermont lately to party with another club out there.â
