âNo. Iâm fine.â
Mariellaâs words give Hope the green light she was waiting for. âIâd like to get you in to see an attorney I know. Heâll accompany you when you recant your statement.â
That gets Mariellaâs attention. âWhatever you need me to do. Iâm so sorry for everything.â
Hope doesnât acknowledge the apology. I imagine sheâs not in a real forgiving mood. Forced into it or not, this girlâs statement has turned Hopeâs world upside down. Even though sheâs one of the sweetest people Iâve ever knownâeveryone has their limit.
Hope flashes a tight smile. âIf you need something let me or Trinity know.â
My hand shoots out and grabs her arm before she leaves. âI want to take her to the doctor tomorrow. Can you arrange your meeting around that?â I feel horrible even asking. The thought of delaying Rockâs release by even a second churns my stomach. I canât imagine how Hope feels. But she nods. âSure. Weâll discuss it in the morning.â
âGood night, Mariella.â Hope stops in the doorway. âYouâll be safe here,â she says over her shoulder.
Not that sheâs a hostage in her room, or anything, but I let Mariella know Iâll come get her in the morning and show her to the dining room.
I walk Hope down to her room. âYou okay with everything?â
She nods, but her bottom lip trembles. âI just want this to work. I needââ her voice breaks and I wrap my arms around her.
âI know. Weâll get him home. Get some rest.â
She pulls back and gives me a weak smile before going inside.
Downstairs, the guys are unwinding, getting drunk, and generally being silly. Wrath holds his arm out to me, and I happily rush over to him and snuggle in his lap. âShe okay?â he rumbles against my ear.
âI think so.â
His arms band around my middle and I lean back against him rubbing my forehead against his cheek.
âAw, you two are so cute, Iâm about to puke,â Ravage snarks at us from his seat on the opposite end of the couch. I flip him off and Wrath chuckles.
Swan drops off several bottles of beer. âShit, Swan, Iâll help you.â Wriggling out of Wrathâs hold is impossible though.
âI need you,â he murmurs.
Yup. Those three, simple words, spoken in his low, rumbly voice, do the trick. It may not be official yet, but Iâm Wrathâs olâ lady. His needs are my only concern now. The reminder brings me peace.
âIâm fine, Trinity,â Swan assures me, before taking a seat between Teller and Ravage.
I must drift off listening to their excited conversations and male bonding stories. The sensation of lifting into the air wakes me. I find myself in Wrathâs arms, being carried to our room. My arms loop around his neck and he smiles down at me.
âYou can set me down.â
Insulted, he rolls his eyes. âI got you.â
âWhereâd Z put the puppies?â
âIn his room for now.â
Seems hard to believe Z would do anything that might interfere with getting laid, but whatever.
In our room, Wrath sets me down and stares at me for a minute. âWhatâs wrong?â
He shakes his head the same way youâd try to shake yourself out of an awful memory. âSeen lots of brutality over the years. Fuck, half the time I inflicted it, but that sceneââ
âDisturbed you?â
âYeah.â
My heart flutters at his sincerity. Men like Wrath donât admit these things easily. That he trusts me enough to share his feelings, means the world. My arms wrap around him and after a minute he hugs me back. âShe said her brother was a hangaround who fucked up one too many times.â
âShe tell you his name?â
âEduardo. She said they killed him and kept her forââ
He pushes me back, staring down at me with a hardened expression. âYou fuckinâ serious?â
Startled, I back away. âYes. Why?â
âEduardoâs the guy who tried to grab you.â
âReally?â
His gaze moves to the door and I grab his shirt to keep him here with me. âIâm glad you got her out safely.â
He snorts. âWe almost didnât make it out.â
I wait for him to elaborate, but he doesnât.
His hands roam over my back and he presses a kiss to the top of my head. âTrin?â
âYes?â
He hesitates, then jerks his head toward the bathroom. âNothing. Get ready for bed.â
At the time, Wrathâs words didnât make a big impact. But bubbling under the surface, my own brutal memories always wait for an excuse to terrorize me. In the middle of the night, I sit up, heart hammering, hair sticking to my sweaty forehead. I havenât had a single nightmare since Wrath took up permanent residence in my bed. But now I canât stop the awful images flashing through my mind.
The pale moonlight shining through my curtains throws enough light for me to see him. He calls me angel all the time, but in sleep, with his face relaxed and his bright blond curls, heâs the one who looks angelic. Well, almost. Careful not to wake him, I settle down as close as I can get to him.
âWhatâs wrong?â he mumbles.
âNothing. I canât sleep.â
He holds out one arm without opening his eyes. âCome here.â
Against his big, warm body, Iâm finally able to find some peace.
I should have kept my fucking mouth shut.
Trinity didnât need any details about Mariellaâs ordeal. I should have kept that shit to myself.
The next morning, Trinâs pale. Her pretty eyes are ringed with dark circles, and a haunted sadness surrounds her. My fault.
I couldnât help it. Seeing Mariella at that old fuckâs mercy made me think of Trinity and the crap sheâs been through. And I feel like shit about it. Sheâs a strong girl. A survivor. Not some victim I need to feel sorry for.
As tired as my girl must be, sheâs up early calling the clinic to make an appointment for Mariella. The few details she provides earn us a ten a.m. appointment.
âThatâs perfect,â Hope says while she and Trinity stand in the doorway making plans. âDamon canât see her until two. I think he wants to hear the story from her, and then bring her down to the DAâs office.â
The cautious bit of optimism in her eyes guts me. Itâs obvious as fuck she doesnât want to let herself think about Rock coming home yet. We all know there are a million things that could go wrong before he gets released.
One step at a time. Mariella to the doctor. Mariella to the lawyer. Mariella to recant her story. Hopefully it all leads to Rock out of jail.
Hanging around a womenâs clinic while the girls do their thing is not my idea of a good time. Mariella looks like she wants to go back upstairs and hide under the bed when she realizes Iâm the lucky fuck playing bodyguard for them today. I almost consider asking Teller to do it, except I want to spend some timeâno matter how awkwardâwith Trinity.
When we arrive, my girl makes that face. The one that makes me do whatever she wants and I grudgingly follow them up the stairs into the waiting room.
For some reason, Mariella follows me over to the row of chairs while Trinity checks her in.
âIâm sorry,â she says softly as she settles into the chair next to me. Itâs the first time sheâs spoken directly to me all morning.
âFor what?â
âThis.â
âNothing to be sorry about.â
To my utter shock and confusion, Trinity follows Mariella back without an explanation. Fucking great. I canât decide what to do first: flip through back issues of Cosmo or stare at the informative STD posters decorating the walls. Both shrivel my dick.
I end up staring at my phone instead until the opening of the door draws my attention up. Trinity returns way more pale and shaken than she went in, instantly pulling me to my feet.
âBabe, whatâs wrong? You okay?â
âIâm fine.â
Mari
ella returns a few minutes later. I settle up the bill with a wad of cash. The receptionist gives me a strange look and I feel like a complete creep. She probably thinks Iâm a fucking pimp.
She hands me a receipt and smiles. âYouâre a nice boyfriend.â
What now?
The what-the-fuck on my face comes through loud and clear I guess. âThe blondeâs your girlfriend, right?â
âYeah.â
âA lot of guys wonât set foot in here, let alone wait and then take care of the bill.â
âOh.â Explaining Iâm here for protection in case a rival MC tries to kidnap Mariella back from us or hurt my girl, probably wonât go over well. âThanks,â I answer instead.
Trinityâs no less agitated on the ride home. I feel for Mariella and Hope, honestly I do, but Trinity is my responsibility. I need to get to the bottom of whatever this is, so I turn Mariella over to Teller and Hope, and steer Trinity into our room.
âWhatâs going on, Angel Face?â
Her mouth stretches into a smile that looks more pained than happy.
âThey squeezed me in for an appointmentââ
I hadnât been sure if she went back there with Mariella or for herself. Now Iâm fuckinâ worried. âYou okay?â
âYeah. I wanted to talk to the doctor about an IUD.â
âWhy didnât you just say so? Whatâd she tell you?â
She rolls her eyes. âShe said if my partner has a giant dick it might be weird. Would you let me finish?â
I burst out laughing before I figure out if sheâs serious or fucking with me. âContinue.â
She sits next to me on the bed, and thatâs when I notice her trembling hands. âTrin, whatâs wrong?â
âI donât know whatâs wrong with me. I sort of freaked out during the exam and ended up telling her aboutâ¦stuff from when I was a kid.â
Jesus.
âBaby, why didnât you tell me?â
âIâm telling you now.â
âOkay.â
âIâve never had that happen before. Notâ¦ever since I left home. Iâve had plenty of nightmares over the years.â
âIâm sorry. Itâs this shit with Mariella.â
âYeah, probably. The doctor thought I should see a therapist. Someone who specializes in sexual assault.â She raises an eyebrow as if sheâs asking a question. Iâm not sure what to say, so I wait. Her gaze lowers to her hands resting in her lap. âWhat do you think?â she asks quietly.
Christ, her questionâs like a knife twisting in my chest. âI want you to do whatever you think you need to do.â
âI want to. I know Iâm fucked up, Wyatt. And youâve been so patient and I,â she stops, tipping her head up and staring at me. âIâd never talk about club business or anything like that.â
âFuck, babe. I know you wouldnât. That didnât even cross my mind.â
âOkay. I just thought...things are so much better now. Between us, I mean. Maybe it would help me be better for you.â
Thatâs it. I canât take this. I pull her into my lap, hold onto her tight. âYou are wonderful for me. I love everything about you inside and out. Whatever you need to do Iâll support.â
âThank you.â Her head falls forward, resting against my chest. âWill you go with me?â she asks softly.
When I hesitate, she sits up. âI donât mean to therapy. Just the doctor said the first few times could trigger stuff and I shouldnât be alone after.â
My throatâs so tight, it takes a second to work any sound out. âOf course, Iâll take you. Whatever you need.â
âThank you.â
CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE
Wrath and Trinity barely glance my way before leaving for her room.
âEverything okay?â I ask Mariella.
She lifts her delicate shoulders, but wonât meet my gaze. âThereâs lunch in the kitchen if you want to eat something before we leave?â
âCome on, Iâll take you down there,â Teller offers and holds out his arm.
Thank you. I mouth as Teller whisks her away. I shouldnât be, but Iâm uncomfortable around Mariella. I know whatever led her to implicate Rock in the murder probably wasnât by choice. Itâs still weird and Iâm still struggling not to wrap my hands around her neck every time I see her.
âYou okay, Hope?â Z asks as he steps out of the office.
âI think so,â I answer with a sad smile.
âCome here.â
He directs me into the office and shuts the door. âWhatâs wrong?â
âI donât know. Iâm scared.â As soon as the words leave my mouth I realize their truth. âIâm worried you guys risked your lives for nothing and we still wonât be able to get Rock out.â
âI know, honey. Weâre all worried about that. Probably more than you because none of us have any faith in the law or regular society.â
Iâm not sure how to respond because more and more I find myself agreeing with the Lost Kings MCâs outlaw ideals. âI know itâs not her fault, butââ
âYouâre pissed at Mariella?â
âI know I shouldnât beââ
âHey, you went through a lot of shit because of those lies. Having Rock torn away from you at your engagement party, that ugly scene with the guard, having to visit your man in jail, and all the shit that comes with it. You have a right to keep your distance.â
âI guess.â Itâs then that I notice, both pups curled up on a pile of blankets in the corner, next to Zâs desk. âThey look cozy.â
His mouth turns up in the impish grin Iâm used to seeing Z wear and glances over his shoulder. âYeah, they wore each other out this morning. Gotta find a vet to take them to. Wanted to make sure they werenât microchipped first.â
âThat makes sense.â
He turns back my way. âI donât want to upset you, but when we found her, it was a bad scene. She wasnât there willingly. And I doubt she had a choice in telling those lies. So no matter what, it wasnât for nothing.â
I swallow hard imagining what things were like for Mariella before coming here. âI know.â
He leans back and sighs. âYou gonna give Glassman a heads-up?â
âI donât think itâs a good idea. The less he thinks Iâm involved with her recanting, the better.â
When Zâs done giving me his pep talk, he walks me down to the dining room. Teller, Murphy, Heidi and Mariella are having an awkward lunch together. Heidi glances up and smiles in relief when she sees me. âHi, Hope.â
âHi, honey. What are you doing up here?â
âMurphy promised to give me driving lessons.â
Teller rolls his eyes. âI said Iâd take you.â
âNo way. Youâre mean.â Heidi shakes her head vigorously to emphasize how mean her big brother is, which gets a laugh out of everyone.
âWeâre ready whenever you are, Hope.â Teller says with a nod at Mariella.
I donât want to get into the details of where weâre headed in front of Heidi. Glancing at my watch, I nod. âWe should probably leave now.â
Mariella waits for Teller to get up.
Heidi watches the three of us, but doesnât say anything. Murphy nudges her elbow. âReady for your first lesson?â he asks, distracting her.
âHeck, yeah!â She throws her arms around Murphyâs neck and happy laughter spills out of her. âIâm getting really good at three-point turns, Hope.â
âGood. If you want to come downtown with me one of these days we can practice parallel parking.â
âYes!â Her enthusiasm for what now seems like a mundane driving skill makes me chuckle. Even the simplest things seem to be more fun through Heidiâs eyes.
My heart races as we pull into the cramped parking lot behind Damon and Maraâs office. They share their modest legal practice with two other partners. Since Damonâs an Empire city court judge, he canât take cases in Empire. Most of his work is in Slater County, or one of the surrounding counties. They havenât gotten around to a rece
ptionist yet, so no one meets us in the outer office. After a minute, Damon comes out and greets us. I introduce him to Teller and he motions for Mariella and me to follow him.
âMara will be back in a few minutes. Iâll have her sit in, since you canât do it, Hope.â
I open my mouth to protest, but heâs right. I donât want to do anything that could jeopardize Rockâs release. Instead I turn to Mariella. âYouâll like Mara, sheâs a sweetheart.â
When Mara arrives, she hugs me and sends me out to wait with Teller.
âIs she okay?â
âYes. Sheâll be fine with them.â
Heâs jittery and canât sit still. âDo you think weâll get Rock out today?â
I snort. âProbably not. First, she has to recant. Thatâs why she needs an attorney, so they donât try to prosecute her for falsifying information or something stupid. Damonâs in a better position to argue coercion than she is. Then Glassman has to be notified.â
âShould we let Rock know?â
The question kills me. Of course I want to tell Rock. âI donât want to get his hopes up in case something goes wrong.â
Teller nods. âProbably better no one at the jail knows until they need to.â
Jeez, I hadnât even considered that.
Shaking off my worry, I continue answering Tellerâs original question. âNormally, if a victim recants, they might still continue the case because they can still prosecute using police reports, photographs and other evidence. In Rockâs case, they have no other compelling evidence. Crap, even her statement wasnât compelling enough toââ I have to stop myself before I get worked up again. âEven after the charges are dropped, it will probably take twenty-four hours to process him out of jail. Glassman will need to request an emergency hearing if the DA doesnât drop the charges when she changes her statement. There may have to be some formal hearing either way. Iâm not sure. This whole thing is out of my realm of expertise.â
Even though Iâd mostly been talking out of my ass, Teller seems satisfied with my explanation. He reaches over and takes my hand. âYouâve been so strong, Hope. Youâre such a good olâ lady. Iâm glad Rock held out for the best.â
Tellerâs not usually so expressive. I squeeze his hand back. âThank you.â
